Good morning TEAM PAWS members:

The forecast for today is rain and thunder storms. Providing there is no sign of thunder/lightening, we will still go jogging, but if we do hear thunder or see lightening for obvious safety reasons this morning's run will be canceled.

If there is thunder/lightening, TEAM PAWS welcome materials will still be available for pick up at 9 a.m.

I'll see everyone who does attend at 9 a.m. and hopefully we can dodge the rain clouds!

Best regards,

Matt

Dear TEAM PAWS Chicago members:

Thank you to everyone who RSVP'd for the dog-friendly Fun Run this Sunday at the Adoption Center!  We look forward to seeing new faces and catching up with returning members.

**Reminder**
There are two more opportunities to pick up your TEAM PAWS welcome materials, singlet, backpack, etc. Pick-up is available TONIGHT at the Adoption Center (1997 N. Clybourn) from 6-8 p.m. or Sunday morning at the TEAM PAWS Fun Run. Out-of-state participants -- your packet and singlet are in the mail!  All remaining packets and singlets will be mailed next week.

Below are details to help you prepare for the Fun Run on Sunday:

ROUTE & MEETING LOCATION

Please meet on PAWS Chicago's rooftop deck. PAWS Chicago is located at 1997 N. Clybourn, but the entrance to the deck is on Racine. We will have signs out to direct you! Because there will be 50-some team members, guests and dogs, it makes the most sense to meet up there! There will be an inside room where you can store your belongings during the run. We will meet at 9 a.m. and leave for the run around 9:05/9:10. We will take the following route:

- Head North on Racine to Dickens, right on Dickens

- Take Dickens East across Halsted to Oz park

- We will meet at the entrance to Oz park and we will run anywhere from 2-10 laps around the park (each lap is between 1/4 and 1/2 mile -- closer to 1/2).

- Head back to the Center by going West on Dickens, left (south) on Racine

TIPS FOR PREPARING YOUR DOG

Please only feed your dog breakfast if he/she has at least 2-3 hours to digest before the run. Even though the run is not far, dogs get very excited and may try to run fast, and if there is food in their stomachs this will increase their risk of getting bloat. Click here to read more about bloat.

IF YOUR DOG IS NEW TO RUNNING

If your dog is new to running, the most important advice we can give you is not to push him/her too hard! Your dog will probably take off at the beginning like an olympic sprinter, and get tired VERY quickly (within a half mile). Many dogs will stay by your side - whatever it takes - so you want to make sure that you are not pushing your dog past his/her limits. We encourage you to do a run/walk, and look at your dog for signs of exhaustion (drooling/foaming mouth, slowing down or running behind you, etc.). We encourage you to walk if your dog looks like he/she needs a break! There is also nothing wrong with walking the entire distance!

JOGGING WITH PAWS DOGS

If you have been trained at the level 2/3 level, please let me know by replying to this email so that we can pair you with a level 2/3 dog. We do have 50-some RSVPs for Sunday and a number of you that want to run with PAWS pups. We won't know who is available to run until adoptions are over on Saturday, so we just want to prepare you to possibly pair up or have even 3 people focus on a PAWS dog depending how many we have with us.

PARKING

Parking is available in the Anixter Center lot -- across the street from the Adoption Center. Note: this is not the Petco lot (you will be towed if you park there), it is just a little further north -- across Magnolia from Chipotle. If you are headed north on Clybourn (and the Adoption Center is on your right) you will make a left at the first traffic light after you pass the Cetner. This is Magnolia. You will then make your first right into the Anixter Center lot!

We are looking forward to seeing all of you on Sunday and answering any questions you may have. If you can't make it on Sunday, we will have plenty more of these fun runs throughout the summer!

Best regards,
