September is Go4Life® Month!

The National Institute on Aging at NIH wants to encourage you to stay active as you age. Being active has many health benefits, including:
  • Help you maintain and improve your physical strength and fitness.
  • Help with balance
  • Help manage and improve diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and osteoporosis.
  • Can help reduce feelings of depression and may improve mood and overall well-being.
According to the NIH, the key to functional fitness is to focus on the four different types of exercise--endurance, strength, balance and flexibility. If your activity of choice is walking, try incorporating free weights or body weight exercises a few times a week. A weekly yoga or tai chi class can help round out your fitness regimen. For tips, exercise suggestions and more visit the Go4Life® website!

Preparing for (Natural) Disaster

With the devastating flooding in Louisiana, and the memory of South Carolina's similar flood event still fresh in our memories, the ability of natural disasters to wreak havoc is without question. Taking the time to prepare for the worst could help save your life or property.

Ready.gov has a helpful flood guide with safety tips and recommendations for preparing for natural disasters, including flooding. Most people don't realize how powerful shallow water can be! Knowing your evacuation routes and planning ahead for how to contact or meet up with loved ones can help keep everyone safe.

Since it's also hurricane season, make sure your emergency preparedness kit is fully stocked. Offer to prepare a kit for your elderly neighbor or aging parents, or just keep extra supplies on hand.
