A New School Year Has Begun! September 2016 not only marked a new school year but also is the first school year where GAB is fully recognized as a school club. Special thanks to the graduating GAB seniors and upper classmen who helped make this recognition possible; and the group of new freshman who are excited to pick up the GAB torch.  A new aspect of our Peer Ambassador Program is the GAB Peer Ambassador Committees.  These committees include: Marketing, Project Management, Fundraising, Events, Editorial, and Budget Management, and will allow the Peers to play a more empowered role of leadership and responsibility.  Also new this year is a revamped GAB Peer Ambassador bulletin board in the high school.

Meetings_Peers Peer Ambassodor Meetings

Generations Against Bullying has completed the Peer High School Training Manual!

GAB Peer Ambassador monthly meetings have been filled with a lot more than just bullying education and Peer Ambassador training.  We have had wonderful guest speakers and special appearances who discuss the connection between various topics and bullying or Upstanding.

At the March 2016 Peer Ambassador monthly meeting, Sahara De Vore gave a presentation on the power of stepping out of your comfort zone and traveling.  As a world traveler, Sahara has visited over 70 countries and has faced many roadblocks and challenges along the way.  She discussed with the Peers how important it is try new things, meet new people, overcome challenging situations, and understand the differences among people, culture, and environments around the world.

At the November 2016 Peer Ambassador monthly meeting, the Peers did group exercises  to learn more one another and to learn that everybody shares some commonalities that they may not realize.  Corey McLure with Cho's Martial Arts presented at the November monthly meeting.  The Peers enjoyed learning how martial arts not only aids in self defense but in self- empowerment, confidence, and improving self-esteem while empowering others to do the same.  The Peers can't wait for Corey to return and teach them martial arts moves and board breaking!

Do Wisconsin school districts have a duty to protect students from bullying?

Yes, there are federal and state laws that protect students from harassment and bullying. The federal protections include the Equal Protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

"Bullying toughens you up"-  One of the many myths believed about bullying, which helps us to "normalize" this behavior. We act as if it's just something that all kids go through-a rite of passage that couldn't possibly cause lasting harm.
