GACCs Shine Spotlight on CEBIT Digital Innovation Festival
Standing, from left: Victor Boyajian, Global Venture Technology of Dentons, Reinhold Umminger, Director of Key Accounts for CEBIT and Dietmar Rieg, GACC
The German American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. in collaboration with Dentons Venture Technology in New York and the German trade show organizer Deutsche Messe AG, hosted an October 27 event spotlighting Europe's premier Digital Innovation Festival CeBIT.

The event was part of a week-long roadshow through the US with stops in Phoenix, Orlando, Kansas City and New York City. The New York stop focused on current digitization trends and innovation in the Tech Startup scene, and offered an opportunity to learn about international business exposure at CeBIT trade show in Hanover, Germany.

New York City is home to an estimated 7,000 high-tech companies, which provide more than 100,00 jobs in the high-tech industry and more than 150,000 technology jobs in non-technology industries, such as health care, retail and finance. Silicon Alley, based in Manhattan, is a metonym for the sphere embracing the city's high-tech industry.

In the past few years, a growing number of startups were founded in the Big Apple. This growth is fueled by factors such as the rise of several prominent startups (Foursquare, Kickstarter etc.), the arrival of venture-backed accelerator programs to help young startups get off the ground and moves by New York City's government to encourage tech innovation.

New York and Germany Cooperate on Energy Efficiency
The delegation of energy efficiency experts from New York State who traveled to Berlin.
The German American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. hosted an event at NYU Center for Global Affairs this past October 16 that provided key insights from this year's New York - Berlin energy efficiency delegation trip in June.

Topics such as energy policy, energy efficiency in cities and buildings, sustainable transportation, and the movement towards 100% renewables were addressed. During a panel discussion actionable recommendations were identified that could be applied to today's energy policy in New York State.

The June delegation consisted of 15 energy stakeholders from New York State who were invited to Germany for five days of idea exchanges with their German counterparts. The US delegation was given the opportunity to learn more about German energy policies, meet relevant stakeholders and visit real-life manifestations of policy. This exchange was so popular and productive that another delegation trip will take place in March 2018.

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) is pursuing international energy policy cooperations, to build strategic relationships with partner countries. The GACCs support the BMWi in their aim to foster energy policy exchange with the US.

Doing business with the United Nations offers great potential. In 2016, the UN organizations procured for more than $17 billion. Against that backdrop the GACC NY in collaboration with the German Mission to the UN organized a UN Procurement Seminar in NYC exclusively for German companies this past October

Representatives of approximately 30 companies received first-hand information from UN representatives of various New York-based UN agencies. Among the speakers was United Nations Procurement Division's (UNPD) Procurement Director Mr. Dmitiri Dovgopoly, who showcased the different procurement areas and needs of the organization.  Presentations from UN procurement staff organizations such as UNDP, UNICEF, UNOPS, Global Compact and UNDB were also featured.

Technical staff from the Department of Field Support (DFS) shared their experiences from the field and explained how business opportunities are generated. In addition to the UN presentations, Dr. Christoph Schemionek from the RGIT (Representative of German Industry + Trade) spoke on business opportunities at the World Bank. Attendees were particularly enthusiastic about the one-on-one meetings with UN procurement officers.

As an added bonus, companies were treated to a guided tour of UN headquarters on day two of the seminar, which was supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Similar seminars take place on a regular basis at different UN locations.
