Impressive Array of Startups at Latest STEP NY Session
A capacity crowd at the STEP NYC September Pitch Night.
The GACC welcomed another STEP (Startup and Entrepreneur Program) group this past September in New York City. Ten tech startups with their 18 founders and co-founders joined us September 10 to 15 to explore their potential for business success in the US by meeting venture capital providers, clients, local accelerators and incubators.

During the five-day program, 21 partners provided our STEP participants with: company insights; legal and PR training/strategy sessions; workshops and feedback forums. On September 14, Venture Out joined the GACC in hosting a fully sold out STEP NYC pitch night at SAP.io. Our enthusiastic crowd crowned Tickaroo the pitch night winner, with startups jetlite and AiRelo achieving second and third place respectively.

Other participating startups included: Gigaaa, GrapeAgent, myBlix Software GmbH, q-lipay, ShoptheWall, trusted blogs GmbH and UNIKATOO GmbH & CO.KG.

European Ambassadors Discuss Future of International Business
The GACC NY, together with our partners of the European-American Chamber of Commerce, our sponsor, KPMG and host Thomson Reuters, welcomed the Permanent
Representatives to the United Nations from Belgium, Germany, Spain, Ukraine and the United Kingdom to provide their insights on the most pressing challenges and promising areas of opportunity that face the international business community 2018.

State of New Jersey Eager to Attract More German Companies

With New Jersey approaching its gubernatorial election on November 7, campaign team members of one of the candidates  recently met with representatives of the GACC NY to discuss ways to enhance relations between the Garden State and Germany and, in particular, identify ways to boost business.

Dan Sommer and Dini Ajmani, who are on the campaign staff of New Jersey gubernatorial candidate Phil Murphy, visited our office early September to learn more about German companies and their opinions on New Jersey as a location for their businesses. It's noteworthy that The candidate is a former US Ambassador to Germany, a role which may have provided him with valuable experience and a greater appreciation for promoting good German American business relations.

Currently, there are a range of small to large German companies operating in New Jersey, including:  BMW of North America, BASF, Siemens, Bayer, Kuehne & Nagel, to name a few.
 
Germany Bestows Distinguished Honor on Martin Richenhagen
Former chairman of the GACC South and esteemed German-American business leader Martin Richenhagen has been awarded the prestigious German Federal Service Cross 1st class - a top honor.

The award was presented by German Ambassador to the US, Dr. Peter Wittig,  on behalf of Germany's President, at a reception and dinner at the German embassy in Washington. 

As GACC chairman, Mr. Richenhagen for many years  actively supported and promoted German-American economic relations. Since 2004, he has been chairman and chief executive officer of the US agricultural equipment group AGCO with approximately 20,000 employees and annual revenues of US$8.5 billion.

A STEP NY Success Story: LeanIX Looks Back on a Successful Nine Months in 2017
LeanIX, an IT startup from Bonn (Germany), is continuing its success story. In addition to opening an office in Boston, the company has completed a very successful Series B

financing round and is currently part of the newly launched Microsoft Accelerator program. LeanIX helps companies modernise their IT with its Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) application for Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM). More than 90 well known customers worldwide, including Adidas, DHL, Merck, Vodafone and Zalando, use LeanIX technology.

After participating in the GACC's STEP NYC program in 2016, this startup from Bonn is gearing up to establish a sales organization with five to seven employees in the next few months. 
"Thanks to the outstanding experts from areas such as marketing, communications and law, the STEP NYC week has contributed to further sharpen our approach for market entry and establish the organization," says Jörg G. Beyer, LeanIX co-founder and Co-CEO, as well as interim manager of the Boston office.

German Event & Concert Companies to Visit NY and LA

A delegation of select German companies from the event and concert industry will visit New York City and Los Angeles from November 6 - 10 to meet with local industry leaders, research institutions and government representatives. The mission of this trip is to exchange ideas, discuss new developments and lay the groundwork for future cooperation.

One key component of the trip is a November 7 conference titled Event and Concert Promotion: German American Business Opportunities. It will provide an exclusive opportunity to hear from expert speakers and meet with US and German companies to learn about the latest trends shaping the event industry. The conference will also provide information on the legal framework for expanding a business in the US and how countries can profit from bilateral trade in the industry. This conference is FREE and sponsored by Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie (BMWi) with support from the GACC.


GACC NY Participates in Falling Walls Lab in New York 
On September 14, 2017, the German Center for Research and Innovation (GCRI) New York hosted the Falling Walls Lab for the second time. This competition gives the next generation of academics the opportunity to share their ideas and innovations. More than 57 Labs take place worldwide.

Katja Wiesbrock-Donovan, head of the Culture and Science Section at the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in New York, opened the event with a short welcome speech. Dr. Nina Lemmens, executive director of the GCRI New York, moderated the event.

The young candidates had three minutes to present their projects and answer questions from the audience. The distinguished jury consisted of the chairman Dr. Kurt Becker from the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, Dietmar Rieg, the CEO of the German American Chamber of Commerce, Inc., Irmintraud Jost, executive director of the Heidelberg University Association, Dr. Ya-El Mandel-Portnoy, winner of the Falling Walls Lab New York 2016, and Dr. Gerrit Rössler, the new program manager of the GCRI.

Annual Quadrille Ball in NYC on October 16

The Quadrille, a fundraiser for student exchange between the US and Germany, is inviting young professionals to join the Quadrille Ball 2018. Every year, young volunteers from diverse professional and national backgrounds between the ages of 21 and 30 perform the French dance, Quadrille, at this German-American Ball. Prospective dancers for the next season may join a reception in Manhattan on October 16, 2017. They will learn about the dance, their commitment, the people involved, the Quadrille Ball on February 3, 2018, and the charity itself
