June 2014
It's Summer Time!

And we are dog-gone excited!  It's time to start planning for Alley Cats L/A's Annual Yard Sale and the Strutt your Mutt Dog Walk & Dash for dogs 5K.

Do you have salable items in clean condition you want to donate to help raise funds for our feral cat program?  You can deliver them to the Shelter on Thursday, August 7th or Friday, August 8th between 9am-6pm.
GAHS to the Rescue!
When a State Humane Agent calls - we listen!  And, apparently they have us on speed dial?  But we never complain as we are always more than willing to help the animals who need us - whether they are local or from away!

Last month, we helped by welcoming 3 adults dogs and 6 puppies from a case in Trenton (photo above).  Sometimes people mean well, but after seeing the decrepit conditions these dogs were living in, the Humane Agent highly recommended the owners turn them over for a new chance at life.  Within the week they arrived at GAHS and were vaccinated,  spayed/neutered and given a clean bill of health!

On Monday, we were back on the road traveling north.  Our mission, lend a helping hand again and return with 41 cats!  Last week the state investigated a case expecting to see 20 to 25 cats in a home in Washington County; they found over 80.

Sadly, animal hoarding does exists, not only in Maine but throughout the country.  According to the ASPCA, Animal Hoarding is defined as "a complex and intricate issue with far-reaching effects that encompass mental health, animal welfare and public safety concerns. " They use the following criteria to define animal hoarding:
  • More than the typical number of companion animals
  • Inability to provide even minimal standards of nutrition, sanitation, shelter and veterinary care, with this neglect often resulting in starvation, illness and death
  • Denial of the inability to provide this minimum care and the impact of that failure on the animals, the household and human occupants of the dwelling
12th Annual Golf Tournament
Last Thursday, 19 teams spent a splendid day golfing in support of our animal friends!  A sincere thank you to each one of you and our amazing Supporting Sponsors:  Androscoggin Bank, Petco Foundation, Agren, Mechanic Savings Bank and the Shipyard Brewing Co. for helping us raise over $21,000!
This year's Strutt your Mutt Dog Walk & Dash for Dogs 5K
Join us on Sunday, September 21st for the Annual Dash for Dogs 5K & Strutt your Mutt Dog Walk! If you'd like, bring your 4-legged partner and run for a great cause as the Dash for Dogs 5k is one the very few road races that allows you to run with your canine companions.

The 5K race (timed) will start at the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society at 9:00am, and the Walk (not timed) will start at 9:15am. Awards for the runners... will follow completion of the 5k.

The $25 registration fee goes directly towards the care of the over 4,000 dogs, cats and other companion animals that the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society takes in annually.  Click here to sign up to run or walk today!
