Dear
NOFA Vermont members and friends,
The
FDA is considering approval of genetically engineered (GE) salmon,
with a hearing set for this Sunday, September 19. If approved,
there is no policy in place that would require GE salmon to be
labeled as such.
While Vermont farmers aren't threatened directly by GE salmon, of
course, this is the first GE animal to be considered for human
consumption, and will set a precedent for more to come. In
addition, genetic engineering violates the principles of organic
production, and its environmental and human health risks have not
yet been thoroughly researched. For salmon specifically, the
threats to wild salmon populations - already endangered - and the
amounts of antibiotics likely to be administered to these
"macro-mutants" should be cause for serious concern.
We urge you to take action and voice your opposition to GE salmon.
The Center for Food Safety will deliver comments in person and
electronically at the hearing. To submit your comment, please visit their
website.
