Olivia Ordonez, a freshman at Los Lunas High School planning on studying to be a pediatric doctor after she graduates in 2017. The daughter of Marcus and Marian Ordonez, her family is native to the Los Lunas area. Besides her parents, Olivia has three siblings, all brothers. Olivia likes to bake and cook in her free time when she is not diligently studying. Olivia is an AVID and GEAR UP student at Los Lunas High School. This will be her third year in the AVID program, planning to complete a total of 6 years in AVID and obtain her scholarship as a four-year AVID high school student. The AVID freshman courses are sponsored by the Los Lunas GEAR UP Program and taught by the Los Lunas GEAR UP program coordinator. She is also involved in student council and freshman class Council. Olivia has also assisted in GEAR UP events to include Career Day, Read Across America and currently as a peer mentor in her AVID class. Olivia has big goals for herself, she is determined to graduate among the top in her high school class and go on to obtain a four-year degree in medical science at University of Southern California. Her future career choice is to take care of children as a doctor of pediatric medicine.

About four years ago, Olivia's father lost his job of 15 years. It was very difficult for her family to figure out how to make ends meet with no parent having a college degree, only high school diplomas. Jobs were requiring her father to have some type of college education. He realized that you cannot succeed in life unless you have a "paper stating you graduated from college." He finally decided to go to Pima Medical Institute and obtain an associate degree in radiology technology. When Olivia's father went back to school, he realized it was vital that he and her mother stress the importance of going to college. Today, her dad is continuing his education to get a bachelor's in radiology and her mother is now in school to receive an associate as a pharmacy tech and a bachelor's in healthcare administration from Pima Medical Institute. Olivia wrote a cardboard confessional in her AVID class that said the following, "I've always been told to never look back on the negatives and always look forward to the positives." Let's see where GEAR UP and AVID can take her in four years!

Bernalillo GEAR UP Student of the Month is Rachel Martinez. She is a junior but will graduate this year. Rachel has been chosen because she is a dedicated student who works hard, gets good grades, has a positive attitude and is involved in many GEAR UP activities her school. As busy as her schedule is she still makes it to all the GEAR UP functions and always takes a leadership rule. She is a student anyone can count on. Rachel states, "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in GEAR UP because it has opened my eyes to the options I have after high school. We have attended college visits and fairs and have done many different activities. These have taught me leadership skills and gave me things that I could use throughout my lifetime. GEAR UP is a great program that I will continue to be a part of."

Gates Millennium Scholars provide personal and professional development through leadership programs along with academic support throughout their college career.

Character, leadership, and service. These are the core values that define a Daniels Scholar.
The Daniels Scholarship Program distinguishes itself from other scholarship programs that focus purely on academic achievement or financial need by selecting young leaders of exceptional character with the desire to give back to their communities.

Bill Daniels defined the specific criteria and unique perspective used to select Daniels Scholars. In addition to overall character, they look for natural leaders with the motivation to succeed and the potential to be engaged in the community. From the thousands that apply, roughly 250 young people from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming are awarded scholarships each year. The dealine is 4:00 PM MST on Friday, November 15, 2013.
