GEAR UP NM Students Attend Leadership Conference in Albuquerque

Eight students from each GEAR UP NM district attended workshops during the Student Leadership Conference held in Albuquerque in AprilENLACE Mentors engaged students in developing Personal Action Plans that will assist them in their journey of authoring their lives and reaching their dreams. They worked on building relationships and collaborating as part of a team, identified their goals and the obstacles to those goals, and developed tools that will help them overcome those obstacles. They worked collaboratively to develop Regional Plans of Action to share with their peers when they return to their communities.

Students participated in workshops on college and career readiness and leadership development that included icebreakers, small group and partnered activities, team building, and a poetry slam/ice cream social. One of the main goals of the conference was to give students skills that promote GEAR UP NM and help them develop GEAR UP NM Ambassador programs at their schools.

Dr. Fidel J. Trujillo spoke at the luncheon on April 30, 2014. His keynote, "The Flight of the Bumblebee: Academic Success for Nuevomexicano Students," encouraged the students to have big dreams and he let them know that their dreams are obtainable. He also is an adjunct professor at Highlands, teaching in the university's first-year experience program and at the graduate level. GEAR UP NM Students Get Bostick Sized Message on Success

Aric Bostick delivered a high-energy keynote to more than 100 students and staff at the April Student Leadership Conference in Albuquerque. Bostick, a nationally acclaimed motivational speaker was one of the highlights of GEAR UP New Mexico's conference, "Leading the Way to College and Career Readiness."

Bostick talked to students about ways they could find the "hero" within themselves to reach their potential.

"Your life matters," Bostick said to the students. "What do you want to give the world?"

He told students that in order to be "fired up" about their futures they would have to remain dedicated to studying, achieving and believing in themselves throughout the entire process.

Bostick has inspired more than half a million people worldwide over the past 10 years as a speaker. His audiences have been middle and high school students, as well as college students, parents, teachers and even executives and others from Fortune 500 companies across the country.

At the GEAR UP NM conference, Bostick also offered a workshop for students the day after his keynote address. The objective for his workshop was to help students find the answer to the question, "Why are you here?" His message and activities offered students strategies to overcome obstacles that hold them back from believing in themselves. Bostick explained how success and happiness are an "inside job," and that they are defined by each individual.

"You can be the person you really want to be," he said. "So don't forget to be ready and to stay fired up about who you are and how awesome your life can be starting right now."

Bostick is one of the nation's leading motivational speakers, success trainers and a bestselling author.

Bostick visted Mora Independent Schools the same week of the conference. According to Rick Bustos, Program Coordinator for Mora Independent Schools, students are still talking about Bostick's high energy and enthusiastic approach to learning. They said he made them understand that they have the power to achieve their goals throughout high school, college, careers and within their families, said Bustos.
