The Shops at Station Plaza (aka The LIRR Underpass at Sutphin Boulevard project) transforms an unsafe, dark and unattractive truck loading dock area at the heart of the Jamaica transit hub into a pedestrian- friendly public corridor space with special lighting over the roadbed and sidewalk, and creation of spaces for several retail shops. The project also provides new commissary and service space, emergency generators and loading docks for the Long Island Railroad. The construction was funded by seed money from the Port Authority with other funding provided by US DOT, NYC EDC and NYS (MTA) capital funds. The project commenced in Fall 2009 and achieved substantial completion in the first quarter of 2012.
