April 8, 2013 GLOW Update
A NEW Message from
Girls on the GLOW!
Good day, GLOW Friends!
What a glorious Opening Day we had on Saturday! I don't know what was shining brighter, the sun or our GLOW Girls!
Thank you to all of our wonderful helpers who made our Opening Day special by providing snacks (leftovers went to a youth shelter in Glassboro... they were thrilled!), handing out t-shirts and water bottles, and coaching our girls through their first practice of the season. Their first lesson was about Positive Thinking and how important that is in becoming a TRY-athlete. We can only do it if we try, and we will only try if we believe in positive thinking. All the girls were asked what they want to try as a TRY-athlete so be sure to ask your daughter what she answered. Please encourage your girls to continue their positive thinking at home, at school, anywhere!
Next week's lesson is called Aim High, which is all about setting goals and working hard to achieve them. You can start to talk to your daughter about her goals in preparation for next week's lesson. I know one family that is working on a fitness goal together. What a wonderful idea! Oh, and please prepare your girls that the snacks were a special treat to celebrate our Opening Day so that they aren't disappointed next Saturday!
The remainder of this email is going to be set up a little differently from the previous emails. You will find NEW INFO listed first, then UPCOMING EVENTS, and finally REMINDERS.
FYI, these weekly emails (as well as other important announcements) can also be found on Facebook AND our webpage. If you haven't "liked" our Facebook page, please do so by clicking here

CHANGES TO GLOW WITH MOM EVENT
Please take note that our first GLOW With Mom event, GLOW With Money, is going to be held on Tuesday, April 9th and is sponsored by HFM Financial Advisors. This session will begin promptly at 7:00PM. If you haven't signed up yet, please do so now by clicking HERE.
This event will be held at:
Trinity United Methodist Church

LOST AND FOUND
If your daughter left something behind, we have it! Even if it was from last season, there's a good chance I kept it. Please check when you arrive/leave each week.
NO DRAMA ZONE
Girls on the GLOW is a No Drama Zone, which means that whatever is bothering our girls needs to be checked at the door. When you walk in, you will see a Drama Drop Off Box on the table. Encourage your daughter to write down whatever is keeping her from GLOWing at that moment and drop it in the box. She can then pick an inspirational saying from the Keep It Positive Purse to help bring back her smile and her GLOW. Hopefully your girls will take advantage of this opportunity to keep it positive!
I RAN A MARATHON
This isn't new information, but I want to be sure everyone knows to log in their "miles." Any physical activity counts. Fifteen minutes = 1 mile. For example, if your daughter attends soccer practice for 1 hour, she can log in 4 miles! Please have her log her miles in her journal. Once she has done 26.2 miles, she will receive a certificate that says "I Ran A Marathon!"
FREE SELF-DEFENSE SEMINAR
THIS WEEKEND IS THE LAST OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE A FREE SEMINAR!
Many of us have taken advantage of this opportunity already, including me and my own daughter, and I have to say Duarte Monteiro of Zen Martial Arts and Fitness does a very fine job of providing our girls with the right dose of a healthy awareness of reality, but also provides the perfect amount of fun and laughter for the younger girls. If you have any questions or reservations about this class, please feel free to contact me or Duarte. We will be happy to answer your questions. Here is a link to provide more information, as well:
These seminars are not official Girls on the GLOW events, but are available to any of our members (and their siblings and friends, too!)

ASPIRING ATHLETES 5K TRAINING PLAN
Coach Jennifer McCarthy's group should print and post this training plan in a place where your Aspiring Athlete can reference it. This plan is meant to help an experienced runner obtain her goal of completing a 5K. It can be modified, as needed. DIRECTIONS TO J. Mason Tomlin (JMT) SCHOOL
JMT School is located at 393 Main Street, Mantua, NJ 08051. From Route 45N, turn right at traffic light onto Mantua Blvd (at Post Office), and then turn right again at next traffic light onto Main Street. Continue straight for .7 miles. School is on the left.
Please use the parking lot to the right when facing the school. If that lot is full, you may use the municipal parking lot next door or the fenced-in lot to the left of the school. There is NO PARKING in the circular driveway or on Main Street by order of the Mantua Township Police Department.
T-shirts, journals and water bottles will be distributed at our next practice if you couldn't make it this past week. Please arrive a few minutes early to pick up your swag.WHAT TO WEAR
Probably the most talked about topic will be what to wear! The girls should come dressed to run in their Girls on the GLOW t-shirts, sweatpants or running shorts, proper running shoes, and a hat or visor. A light jacket or sweatshirt is recommended on cooler days. If your daughter wants to bedazzle her t-shirt and personalize it with her name, that is highly encouraged! Just be sure to supervise carefully as a replacement t-shirt will cost $15. Be sure to apply sunblock before arriving!
WHAT TO BRING/NOT BRING
Girls should bring water to drink, their journals, a towel and their smiles! Things to not bring: cell phones, ipods and, of course, the drama!
Please print and complete the Medical Consent and Video/Photo Release Form
which can be found on our webpage. Return it at our first practice."I RAN A MARATHON!"
Your daughter can earn a certificate that says "I Ran A Marathon!" by logging her activities (swimming, biking, soccer, etc.) and miles that she runs in her journal. When logging in activities, 15 minutes of activity = 1 mile. Once she has logged in 26.2 miles, she will earn a certificate!VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!
We are ALWAYS looking for help along the way... if you can help with our special events, please sign up!
If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns, please call or email me. Thank you for supporting our program!!
