Pathway and Bridge is Closed Due to Recent Heavy Rains
Due to the June 12 storm and subsequent rains, the pathway that runs from Sawdust (Grogan's Point area) to S. Millbend (Grogan's Mill Village Center) is closed. The bridge washed out and is not structurally sound. The Parks and Recreation Department is working as quickly as they can to replace the bridge, unfortunately there is not a quick fix and it will take a few months before the pathway is re-opened. What had been a twenty foot bridge is now going to have to be forty to sixty feet. Barricades were installed at either end to deter people from using the pathway.
Take Precautions Against West Nile Virus
From The Woodlands Township:

Texas is experiencing greater West Nile virus (WNv) activity than usual according to the Centers for Disease Control.  Over 95 samples of mosquitoes in The Woodlands/South Montgomery County area have tested positive for West Nile virus.

Residents are urged to take precautions to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites.

Stay indoors from dusk to dawn when disease-carrying mosquitoes are active.  If you must be out, wear long, loose, light-colored clothing.  Use repellent.  Apply according to label instructions.

Avoid over-watering, control run-off from irrigation systems and eliminate sources of standing water.  Check water meter boxes, French drains and plant pots.  Maintain pools and change pet water and bird baths twice a week.  Use mosquito dunks to treat sources of water that cannot be drained.

For more information about repellents and reducing mosquitoes, visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/mosquitoinfo.

Groundwater Reduction Plan

Starting in 2016 The Woodlands will begin using surface water drawn from Lake Conroe, it will be mixed with the existing ground water that we use.  To prepare for this major expenditures will have to be made on water purification facilities and pipelines to bring the water from Lake Conroe.  In 2013 construction of a pipeline will begin.  Within the community Research Forest and Grogan's Mill road will have major construction as pipelines are laid in and near the roadway.

Funding this project will be reflected in your water bills beginning in September when water rates in The Woodlands will increase by a third.  To find out more of what is happening and why visit the websites of the San Jacinto River Authority (our water wholesaler) and the The Woodlands Joint Power Authority (who distriburtes water to our homes).

GMVA Website Receives Facelift
Have you been to the GMVA Website lately?  Our site has received a facelift!  Please take a look and let us know what you think.  The GMVA Website  first  debuted in 2005, so we are excited about  the  first  major make-over in eight years.
Grogan's Mill Farmer's Market has a New Coordinator

Tracy Sagehorn The Grogan's Mill Farmer's Market Coordinator, Katerina Graham, recently resigned the position to pursue her own dream of becoming a small, independent organic farmer. We miss her and wish her well, but look forward to the day when we can welcome her back as one of our organic produce vendors.

Katerina was an amazing Coordinator and hard to replace, so we were fortunate to find another bundle of energy and enthusiasm, our new Coordinator, Tracy Sagehorn (pictured). Under Katerina's excellent tutelage, the market hasn't missed a beet (pun intended). Tracy is a relative newcomer to The Woodlands, moving here with her husband, Steve (a government contracting consultant), and son, Cole (age 4) from Alexandria, Virginia. Tracy graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in advertising.

She has been a farmer's market enthusiast for as long as she can remember and it didn't take her long to find the Grogan's Mill Village Farmer's Market. She was so impressed with the variety of vendors and their products that when she learned that GMVA was looking for a new coordinator, she jumped at the opportunity.  GMVA had several highly qualified candidates to choose from, making this a really tough decision.  Congratulations to Tracy and all our best wishes to Katerina.

Grogan's Mill Farmer's Market
Sign for Farmer's MarketWe are experiencing the "dog days" of summer as our commitment to staging a year-round market continues.  Be sure to borrow an umbrella from the basket near in the center aisle to help provide some shade as you shop.  Although this is a very slow time of the year for growing fruits and vegetables, Atkinson Farms of Spring, TX continues to grow throughout the summer supplying us with fresh produce.  Come late-September or early-October, our other farmers will be rejoining the market, too.
Please continue to support all our vendors  who are there  each Saturday morning.  The offerings include fresh produce, artisan breads and other baked goods, free-range chickens and grass-fed beef, roasted nuts as well as gluten free nut butters, goat cheese and lotions  and soaps , Texas olive oil,  local Texas honey, delicious prepared Indian and Mediterranean specialties along with all the varieties of Grande Tamales.  If you have allergies, check out the chemical-free soaps and cleansers.  We hope to see you at the market!

The market takes place every Saturday morning from 8 am until 12 noon at the Grogan's Mill Village Center, the corner of Grogan's Mill Road and South Millbend.

For more information, please see the GMVA Website.
