BE A PLAYER-BECOME A MEMBER

A Message From Drew Meyers, LTA President

You love the game. You play several times a week or just a few times a month. You have made lifelong friends through tennis. You can't wait until the next challenge the tennis court and your opponent present. You were once a USTA member, but you do not play League or sanctioned tournaments, so there is no reason to be a member of the USTA. However, did you know that a significant portion of your membership dollars are directed back into your community? Did you know that with those dollars, your community tennis association and the Louisiana Tennis Association (LTA) help organize, support, and promote local programs that bring the sport that you love to others?

Your USTA membership has a far ranging and positive impact on the lives of many others.

For years, our members have enjoyed programs like League tennis or tournaments or Junior Team Tennis. Those programs are just one aspect of your USTA membership. Your USTA membership also allows our community tennis associations to support programs for disadvantaged youth, wheelchair tennis, and grass roots programming, to name just a few. Your membership allows us to send as many junior players as possible to Southern Championships and possibly to National Championships. Your community may have the next Chanda Rubin or Ryan Harrison who is hoping for that opportunity to compete.

Tennis is aging. The average age of an American tennis player is 55 years old. Tennis needs an infusion of young players. Your USTA membership helps us spread the word and attract our youth to a sport they can play for the rest of their lives. The LTA is committed to growing the game particularly in the areas of Junior Team Tennis, high school tennis, and at our colleges with the Tennis On Campus program.

How can you help?

Simply go to http://www. usta.com  and click on the "JOIN TODAY OR RENEW" button at the top right. Please consider a family or a lifetime membership. Joining is easy and takes just a few minutes. If you have any questions, please call the Louisiana Tennis Association (800-879-8035) or your local community tennis association. You can also go to htttp://www.louisianatennis.com   which will have links to your community tennis association.

Your membership helps us bring this great sport that we love to many who otherwise may never have the opportunity to hit an ace, complete a great comeback, or make new friends on the tennis court.

So, what can you do to bring tennis and its many benefits to others?

2014 NOMATA President's Message

The New Orleans Metropolitan Area Tennis Association (NOMATA) celebrated on November 20, 2013 its 13th anniversary of incorporation as a USTA Community Tennis Association (CTA).

Our continued goal is to promote the development of tennis as a means of healthful recreation and physical fitness for the Metropolitan New Orleans area youth & adults, and to cooperate with the United States Tennis Association and other associations in the pursuit of these aims.

Over the past several years our tennis community has experienced many changes; to name a few ....... The way we communicate, tennis facilities, league format/rules & regulations, volunteers, leadership, growth, etc.  Changes are not always easy; but often, they are necessary.  It requires courage, faith, and a willingness on our part to grow and share our lifetime sport of tennis with family and friends.

NOMATA's objectives are aligned with the USTA's;

-         Vision & Mission... to promote & develop the growth of tennis by offering the best youth & adult programs

-         Core Values... to emphasize good sportsmanship and incorporate a Code of Ethics

-         Strategic Direction & Priorities... create opportunities for staff & volunteers to discuss strengthens/weakness & trends of our sport

-         Program goals...  to identify & create tennis play opportunities for our communities

Our 2014 focus will continue to be on promotion & sponsorship of;

-         Youth programming to provide a pathway for participation in the Junior Team Tennis League and opportunities for recreation play

-         Adult Beginner programming of "Tennis Apprentice" in providing a pathway for participation in the Adult League programs

-         Customer Service

-         Social Media

-         Partnerships with public/private tennis facilities, young professional groups, schools, government & community agencies and groups

My sincere appreciation to all Volunteers, Captains, Tennis Pros, Tennis Facility Managers, Junior/Adult League Coordinators, and NOMATA Board Members for your many hours of dedication & service to the tennis community.  I look forward to working with you all again in the coming year.

In 2014, I wish you joy, happiness, good health and above all a continued love for tennis!!

Take care,

Kathy Hinrichs

As the President of the City Park Tennis Club (CPTC) I invite you to increase your presence at the City Park/Pepsi Tennis facility during 2014. There are many options. You can play USTA, Wednesday night 4.0+, Thursday Night tennis, or Friday night doubles. Compete in the sanctioned tournaments. Take a lesson from one of over 15 certified tennis pros. Join a clinic. . Participate in the round robin CPTC tournaments and social events. Buy an annual pass for $450 or play by the hour at one of the finest public facilities in the South.

USTA league play dominates the City Park courts on Monday through Thursday nights. Thanks to Drew Meyers for his leadership of the Louisiana Tennis Association. For any who have travelled to any of the State Championships you see up close how the LTA and its site volunteers labor to pull off great tournaments where many weekend warriors get a chance to compete at their level against teams from across the state. Let's figure out a way to host some of those State tournaments at City Park.

For 13 years NOMATA has coordinated local USTA play. Every USTA captain is aware of the tireless efforts of these coordinators. Carla Catalano leaves the energizer bunny gasping for breath. The other coordinators include: Susan Simoneaux, Carolyn Kramer, Elizabeth LeGros, BJ Johnson and Diane Simpson. The growth of tennis in New Orleans is directly related to the efforts of these coordinators and The CPTC is committed to helping you spread the word.

Much has changed since the City Park Tennis Club was organized on March 9, 1928. We are dedicated to promote and encourage the sport of tennis within the City Park/Pepsi Tennis Facility. That is not an insular activity. We need to reach out and embrace tennis throughout the area. That includes public courts (Terrytown, UNO, Xavier, Stern) and the private clubs (MCC, NOCC, Green Acres, English Turn, Beach Club, Capitanos, Bissonet and others). Many of you come to play USTA at City Park because your clubs have limited courts available for league play. The courts at City Park are your courts and critical to LTA and NOMATA goals of more USTA opportunities. In short we are all in this together.

A word about the CPTC and upcoming events. First our newsletter, The Oak Leaf, was the recipient of LTAs 2013 Media Excellence Award. That initiative is a labor of love by Billy Crawford. If you have tennis news, he wants it and wants to share it through The Oak Leaf. So whether USTA results, junior tennis news or upcoming tournaments or events; drop him a line at [email protected].

Second consider joining the CPTC. If you are a frequent flyer at City Park, this is one attempt at a road map for the activities there. The dues are modest; $25 individual and $30 family. You will support our newsletter and get discounts to our social and tennis events.

Third, upcoming events include: Australian Open Night for members with Aussie wines and beer on Thursday January 16, 2014 at City Park from 7-9 PM; Annual Meeting March 12, 2014 and April Fool's Mixed Doubles Tournament April 5, 2014 (fees are $20 for members and $40 for non-members). A family team saves $40 on tournament fees on a $30 membership.

My New Years wish list includes:

Working with City Park to build 5-6 new courts for expanded USTA league play.

Expanded options for USTA weekend league play at City Park.

City Park tennis improvements (Pro shop/cottage, detached snack bar/cottage with deck, tournament scoreboards, water fountains, move fencing to alongside bayou).

Promote the return of the Sugar Bowl tennis tournament, create Public City Championship tournament and bring some USTA State Championships to City Park.

Use technology (twitter feed) to announce official closure of courts for USTA events.

Increased collaboration within the tennis community so everyone has more opportunities to play this great game.

Best wishes for 2014 and see you on the Courts.

A NEW COLUMN FOR 2014

Each month there will appear a "Tennis Tip" from a local USPTA teaching professional. This month veteran pro Lloyd Dillon will share his "Tip Of the Month."  Mr. Dillon is a National Tester, certified by Dennis Van Meer.
He teaches tennis at the Audubon Tennis Center.

5 PRIORITIES IN TENNIS

Lloyd taught me to use my thumb and fingers to remember these 5 priorities in tennis.  (I use them each time I practice or play.)

1.  "Thumbs up" is the universal sign for things are ok--so keep the ball in play.
2.  "Index Finger" is the one we point with. Direction-make your opponent take at least two steps        to hit the ball; direct your shots to the opponent's weakness.
3.   "Middle Finger" is the longest- keep the ball deep.
4.   "Ring Finger"  the ring is a circle- spin will equal control.
5.   "Pinky Finger" is the least finger-  speed is the least priority  (speed kills).
