Promoting Tennis in New Orleans for 86 years

GOOD NEWS FOR TENNIS FANS

This year was the inaugural year for the Nola Tennis Festival, presented by ANTA, benefiting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. This event, held at the City Park/Pepsi Center, was started by New Orleans natives who wanted to make a difference in the community.  They chose St. Jude as their charity and we are so proud of their accomplishments. Over 200 registrations, a huge silent auction, and a top notch players party were some of the highlights from the weekend.

A little bit more information about St. Jude:
Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing, or food-because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.  St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other deadly diseases.  We are working to drive the overall survival rate for childhood cancer to 90 percent in the next decade.  We won't stop until no child dies from cancer.  Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer rate from 20 percent when the hospital opened in 1962 to more than 80 percent today. Because the majority of our funding comes from individual contributors, St. Jude has the freedom to focus on what matters most-saving kids regardless of their financial situation.  We freely share the breakthroughs we make, and every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children.

Thanks so much,

Danny Thomas

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

St. Jude was founded by entertainer Danny Thomas in 1962, with help from Dr. Lemerel Diggs and close friend, Miami, Florida automobile dealer Anthony Abraham on the premise that "no child should die in the dawn of life."
Mr. Thomas, who took his stage name from two of his brother's first names, was born Amos Muzyad Yakhoob Kalrouz in Deerfield, Michigan in 1912.  A Maronite, he was struggling to get a break in his career and living paycheck to paycheck.  When his first child(Marlo) was born, he attended Mass in Detroit and put his last $7 in the offering bin. He prayed to St. Jude Thaddeus for a means to provide for his family, and about a week later he obtained a gig that paid 10 times what he had put in the offering.  Believing in the power of pray, he promised St. Jude Thaddeus if he became successful he would build a shrine to the Saint.  Danny Thomas became extremely successful and built the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.  Why Memphis? Mr. Thomas met with Cardinal Samuel Stretch, his mentor, to discuss his idea of a hospital. He was steered by him to Memphis, the city of the Cardinal's first parish.
Although it is named for the Saint, it is not a Catholic hospital and is not affiliated with any religious organization.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has domestic affiliate clinics in these cities:  Peoria, Ill., Springfield, Mo., Johnson City, Tenn., Huntsville, Ala., Shreveport, La, and Baton Rouge, La.  The purpose of the affiliate clinics is to extend care and benefits to more children, to increase the number of children on the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's clinical trials and to provide clinical, academic and financial support to the affiliate clinics.

In January of this year the Valero 12th Annual Baton Rouge St. Jude Classic was hosted at the Southern Oaks Athletic Club.

On October 16-19, 2014, Northwest Louisiana St.Jude Classic will be held at the Pierremont Oaks Tennis Club in Shreveport.

International Tennis Event

South African National Schools Team
vs.
USA Louisiana Junior Team

was recently held at the University of New Orleans.  All proceeds will benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana.

Yesterday morning Ms. Secret Mbaye introduced me to two members of the South African tennis team. Abner Dickson and Cara O'Flanerty, both 12 years old, are from Johannesburg. They shared with me that they really enjoyed training with the kids from Louisiana.
There are 10 girls and 10 boys on each country's teams. Their team also toured Washington D.C. and Atlanta before arriving in New Orleans. Both young ladies ate for the first time; shrimp, muffaletta sandwich, and Mexican food. They were both so impressive!
