FROM THE MOTHERS’ CLUB PRESIDENT
|
We hope you had a relaxing and fun February break!
The second half of the school year is now in full swing, and we are busy planning the Spring Benefit Fashion Show on April 26th. This event has many opportunities for volunteering, and we hope you will join in the planning.
Contact our Spring Benefit Chairs for more information about the many opportunities:
Our March meeting has been moved to Wednesday, March 21 so we can attend the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King's Speech at Grosse Pointe South on Wednesday, March 14th at 7 p.m. in South's Main Gym. The Mothers' Club is proud to be a sponsor of this historic event and we hope you are able to attend.
We will be voting on additional Enrichment Grants at our March 21 General Membership meeting. These grants are submitted by teachers twice per year and are requests for funding programs or items they feel would greatly improve the education they are providing. Principal Moussa Hamka will be at the General Membership meeting to give us an update on security and safety at GP South, to discuss class scheduling, and to answer questions.
Our Annual Scholarship Night where we grant scholarships to our many deserving Seniors in the Class of 2018 will be held on April 24th. The scholarship application is available on our website and due back to the counseling office by Friday, March 9th.
Looking forward to seeing you at the upcoming events!
Sincerely,
MaryJo Harris
President

Parents, we appreciate the time that you spent with your students discussing course selections and schedules for next year. It was clear from the follow up questions and concerns that we received that there were some great discussions happening at home surrounding life balance and reasonable time management. Please remember that families are still welcome to make changes to next year’s course requests through all of 3
rd
quarter. Feel free to make adjustments as necessary so that we can support healthy students. We are concerned about the choices that students are making to support their health and wellness. Please see the end of this article for stress reduction suggestions.
Evening Conferences will be Thursday March 8 South. This is great timing as it is halfway through the 3
rd
quarter. Most teachers will be located in the Main Gym from 5-8 pm. Counselors will be in the library computer lab.
College Night
will be Tuesday, April 17 at GP North from 6 pm to 8 pm. Over 100 colleges will be present to share information about their institutions and answer questions. More information
here
including a list of attending schools. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming at a college night and families may appreciate this great resource about
how to make the most of your visit to a college fair.
SENIORS
:
It’s not too late to search for Scholarships and Financial Aid. Be sure to check Naviance and the College Resource Center webpage for an ever updating list of scholarships. Be aware that the Mother’s Club Scholarship application is available on the Mother’s Club website. This is an excellent local opportunity! Make sure that you have completed your FAFSA as well. Even if you don’t think you will get any money it's a great idea to show interest in receiving money – sometimes this opens doors that were previously hidden. For general scholarship searching, I am a big fan of
www.fastweb.com
and
http://www.finaid.org/
These are both packed with GREAT information and resources.
AP Students:
JUNIORS:
Current Juniors who are planning to apply to colleges in the Fall of 2018 should make sure that they are doing the following:
2.
Visit your counselor for the Junior Meeting to discuss possible choices that match your individual profile.
3.
Plan to visit college campuses.
4.
Visit the College Resource Center in the library to see college brochures and other information that is available.
5.
Remember that your junior student will be taking a complete SAT in April along with the rest of the state required tests. The days of testing will be April 10 & 11, at Grosse Pointe South. Each student has the opportunity to send their test scores to four colleges for free. Keep in mind any Junior who misses any part of the MME testing the make up times will be the end of April.
6.
Your student will register for the test in school on March 27. You do not need to do anything to sign him or her up online.
SOPHOMORES & FRESHMEN
Sophomores and Freshmen will be taking the PSAT test again on April 10. Have your students linked their College Board account with Khan Academy for Free and effective college test prep? Check out this
You Tube video
about how to do this. Finally, consider attending College Night on March 27 (see details above).

- Breathing strongly influences mind, body and moods. By simply focusing your attention on your breathing, and without doing anything to change it, you move in the direction of relaxation.
- Progressive relaxation is a way of releasing tension in muscles. Often taught in yoga and exercise classes, on self-help tapes and by various instructors - from massage therapists to psychologists - there are many variations of progressive relaxation. (See link for techniques)
- Exercise. For many people, exercise is their main method of reducing stress and promoting relaxation. One of the benefits of regular aerobic exercise is its moderating effect on emotions.
- Massage and body work. For a wonderful, relaxing experience, get a massage or other form of body work. In order to gain full benefit, you need to be totally passive and surrender to the touch of a skilled therapist.
- Visualization and guided imagery. While we all look at our internal images from time to time, especially when we daydream or fantasize, few of us have learned how to develop our imaging capacity and take advantage of its ability to affect our minds and bodies.
- Meditation is directed concentration. Meditators learn to focus their awareness and direct it onto an object: the breath, a phrase or word repeated silently, a memorized inspirational passage, or an image in the mind's eye.
- Mantram is the practice of repeating over and over in the mind certain syllables, words or phrases that help unify consciousness and counteract negative mental states.

Restoration of the Cleminson Hall historic windows and doors has been the focus of this years work for the Preservation committee. As many of you can relate, just like with an older home, renovating a building of GP South’s age creates many challenges. The renovation of the beautiful Cleminson Hall window wall has provided a number of surprises and issues, and as a result the timeline for the project was extended. For example, the beautiful bronze doors located in Cleminson, that open (or prior to this project did not open) to South’s front lawn, had deteriorated to the point that many on the job felt they could not be saved. The interior components of the doors had corroded immensely and were beyond repair. After a lot of research and work, we were able to recreate these interior components, save the doors, and they are now in the final phase of completion.
The “window wall” is 90 years old, and this restoration will continue to enhance the architectural integrity of Cleminson Hall and Grosse Pointe South, for another 90 years! We are excited to be nearing the finish line, and reminded that this project is a great example of why the Mothers Club has, and will continue to place such a strong emphasis on preservation of our beautiful building. Thank you to the South community for your patience as this project was much more complicated than originally anticipated.
If you have any interest in the preservation of Grosse Pointe South, please contact me at
[email protected]
.
Best,
Sue Martin
VP of Preservation

The goal of this committee is to enrich the educational experience of our students by funding in-class enhancements, extra-curricular programs, and equipment and materials that the district cannot otherwise fund. Mothers’ Club enrichment support goes throughout the school and across the curriculum, funding projects and programs in the arts, sciences, business, and more.
Twice a year, teachers submit requests for funding programs or items, which they feel, would greatly improve the education they are providing. The next Enrichment request cycle is currently underway. These requests are reviewed at a meeting with the Principal and Executive Board members
and will be presented for approval at the March 21 General Membership meeting.
