Did you know, according to the Washington Post, in 2017 the average American spent more than 2 hours and 45 minutes per day watching TV, every day of the year (or nearly 10 times the amount of time they devoted to reading for pleasure)?
During the summer – make it a point to visit us! There are no commercial breaks and no repeat episodes. Every time you come, you’ll find something new toread, listen, or watch. You’ll see a neighbor and find out what they are reading and say “I must get that book!” Save your money and put something on reserve at the library.
Challenge yourself to turn off the television set and pick up a book. There is proof that it will help your whole self. We love to be entertained and when we’re tired, it is so tempting to turn on a re-run of your favorite show. Try reading a book and share your thoughts about it with a loved one, or a colleague. There arebook groups for Teens and Children to help with social interaction and encourage talk about great books. Stumped at what to read? Try out our Staff Picks page, where the Greenburgh Public Library staff provides you with their favorite reads! We have all different picks from Science Fiction to Mystery, your interest will be sparked.
There is truly something for everyone in the family at the Library.
Explore our Digital Collections: Cloud Library & Libby
Have you tried out our digital collections yet? For quite a while the library has offered digital materials that can be checked out on computers, tablets and mobile devices. In recent years the variety of platforms for borrowing these materials has increased, and the ease of use has improved on many of the available apps.
Why give digital a try? Librarian Genie Contrata encourages:
Why not? You have nothing to lose! They're free, easy, and return themselves.
Get a book anytime, anywhere. On vacation? No problem! With an Internet connection you can borrow a book no matter where you are. Can't sleep? Download a book to keep you company in the middle of the night.
Personalize your reading experience. Make the type nice and big, adjust the background from sepia to super bright, or read white text on a black background, whatever is easier for you.
Two great apps to get started borrowing popular fiction, nonfiction, and audiobooks are CloudLibrary and Libby (by Overdrive). Librarian Genie Contrata recommends CloudLibrary for its ease of use and simple interface. She also recommends Libby for patrons who may winter or summer somewhere else in the US, because Libby has the ability to manage multiple library cards and library memberships. If you own property in Florida and go there for the winter Libby can list all your different cards, which gives you access to both library's collections.
To find out more about our digital collections visit our eLibrary page. To access them you’ll need to make sure you have a library card (which you can register for here if you don’t already have one), and download the apps (CloudLibrary & Libby). Happy reading!
