 A look at contemporary artists using a cartoon-based vocabulary
 with all "Pop" & "Commercial" references extracted and
 removed.

 GRONK - "Three Prong Claw"
 (Gallery Basement)

 

Gronk is a founding member of ASCO, an East LA multi-media arts collective in the Coagula Curatorial Gronk

1970s, and best known for his murals. He is heavily involved in theater, with

 elaborate, award-winning stage design for such organizations as the 

Los Angeles Opera and Santa Fe Opera. His scenic work has also been featured

 onstage with Latino Theater Company and East West Players. 

  

Gronk has collaborated with Kronos Quartet, was an artist-in-residency at University of New Mexico, and was given a career retrospective, as a member of ASCO, at Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

  

Gronk's murals, paintings on canvas, and widely-collected screen prints, relate to the direct visual aesthetic contained in works by German Expressionist Max Beckmann and cartoon-like paintings of American Phillip Guston, along with vernacular of early civilizations (i.e. Toltec figurines).

  

Artist will be present at opening reception.

Both shows run until July 8th.

To celebrate twenty years of publishing Coagula Art Journal, acclaimed editor, art critic and curator Mat Gleason opened Coagula Curatorial as a premiere exhibition space of contemporary art.

 

COAGULA CURATORIAL is located in the historic Chung King Road of contemporary art galleries in Downtown L.A.'s Chinatown, the gallery affirms Downtown as a viable location for the creative industries that drive the Los Angeles economy.
