TRAFFIC OUTLOOK
UGH, IT'S UNGA
Gridlock Week arrives Sunday! Yes, it's that time of year folks when more than 100 world leaders descend on NYC for the UN General Assembly. And when they move about - you don't!
Sunday, the FDR will close from the Battery until 63 rd St. about 5 p.m. for the arrival of President Trump, one of the 139 leaders hitting town this week, many arriving today.
Dignitaries are mainly staying in East Side hotels between 34 th and 79 th Sts. The leaders will be shuttled into the UN for sessions, beginning at 9 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, closing the FDR near 42 nd St. at times. East 42 nd and 57 th Sts. will have lane closures most of the time. First and Second Aves. will frequently be no-go zones, as will Fifth and Madison Aves. when POTUS is in motion.
Monday, at Lotte Palace on Madison Ave. between 50 th and 51 st Sts., Trump will meet with foreign leaders all day and then host a reception with many of them from 7 to 9 p.m. Madison Ave. will be closed for 10 blocks most of the day.
Expect other high-level meetings at The Palace until Thursday, when the president is expected to leave town in the morning (the same day Israeli and Palestinian leaders also speak), shutting the lower half of the FDR around 9:30 a.m. The streets between the hotel and Trump Tower at 57th and Fifth Ave. will close often.
Tuesday morning the leaders of the U.S., Iran, and Turkey are among the speakers, and Wednesday the Security Council will meet, so security will be at the highest levels both days. Wednesday the Plaza has a high-profile event 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. near 59th St. and Fifth Ave. Friday is lighter with "only" 26 leaders speaking.
Don't even THINK of driving in East Midtown! NYC DOT has made it easier to park-n-ride from Queens and Long Island. Commuters can park at Citi Field before noon this week for $5 and take the 7 train or LIRR. Via is offering discounts on shared Manhattan rides, and Citi Bike has UNGA deals too. (Although I'm puzzled why there'll be bike lane closures on First and Second Aves., even when cars are allowed.
C'mon guys, use you heads - a bad guy in a car can do far more damage than a bad guy on a bike.)
Protests galore all week! Follow me on Twitter for updates.
