a monthly ePublication from Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania for our nine-county council

GSEP Board President Debbie Hassan (left) and CEO Kim Fraites-Dow (right) with girl delegates at the 54th National Council Session.

Hello from Ohio!
I'm writing to you from the Girl Scouts 54th National Council Session and G.I.R.L. 2017 convention in Columbus, Ohio. I'm thrilled to be here with 60 girls and adults from our council who will have the opportunity to connect with 10,000 sister Girl Scouts from around the world.
As we kick off the 2017-2018 membership year, there's so much to be excited about. Like 23 new STEM and outdoor badges. Check them out in the new Volunteer Toolkit, a digital resource that helps leaders plan their troop activities and lets parents explore curriculum and programs. Speaking of programs, we've got new G.I.R.L.-inspired Spark programs like the Thanks-A-Lot Trot, Real Girls Code and Girltopia. And Nuts About Reading (NAR) is better than ever with a new recognitions plan and incentives that mean big bucks for troops.

Fall is a busy time for Girl Scout families who juggle many activities like sports, extracurricular clubs, and more. But make no mistake that Girl Scouts is an irreplaceable experience for girls. I like to say Girl Scouts is not an either/or but an and/must... because our girls are leaders in everything they choose to do. Through troop meetings, summer camp, highest award projects, the cookie program, community service and more, girls discover their passions, stretch their limits, and shine their absolute brightest while making our communities better. At a time when your daughter is trying to find her voice in this world, Girl Scouts encourages her to speak confidently, stand tall, take a risk, and become the leader she's meant to be - all in a girl-led and girl-only nurturing environment. That's an experience she can't get anywhere else.

I hope you're as excited for 2018 as we are. This year we're stronger than ever, with new programs and badges, innovative volunteer tools, and a focused customer service team dedicated to supporting members. Most of all, we're strong because of you, our Girl Scouts. Are you ready to show the world that you're a G.I.R.L (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-Taker, Leader)? We thought so.

Now, let's do this!

Yours in Girl Scouting,
Kim E. Fraites-Dow

Katie developed a website that introduces different STEM fields to girls preparing for high school and college. By working with Villanova University's Society of Women Engineers, Katie's website offers empowering video interviews of female professors and students from across the university's numerous STEM fields. Katie hopes her website will address the need for women in STEM fields and encourage  girls to consider STEM options when picking high school a nd college courses. She hopes more girls will think about STEM careers and understand that science isn't scary or just for boys. "With my website, hopefully, one girl will decide that science is for her," Katie says, "and be brave enough to enter whatever fields she wants."
