GSSCC Working to Maintain Access for Lyttonsville Bridge Users

Businesses along Brookville Road recently learned that current plans for Purple Line construction through that area call for the complete closure of the Lyttonsville Place Bridge for six months while the new bridge is being built. Businesses and residents had expected that the bridge, which links the "dead-end" Brookville Road to Grubb Road and eventually East West Highway, would be constructed in phases, allowing for at least one lane to be open throughout construction. Businesses and residents believe that the proposed detour, which would take all traffic to 16th Street, Georgia Avenue, and around to East West Highway, is unacceptable in terms of both safety and convenience. GSSCC has reached out to the Maryland Department of Transportation, the Montgomery County Department of Transportation, State Senators and Delegates, and Montgomery County Councilmembers to either reconsider plans to phase construction, create access by opening other existing roads, or create a right of way to connect the Brookville Road area with the Rosemary Hills neighborhood. Members with questions about this area should contact Jane Redicker for more information.
East Silver Spring Purple Line Construction Update

Purple Line Transit Partners reports that this week crews will begin erecting and commissioning the tower crane at Manchester Station, near Plymouth Street. Large trailers will be transporting necessary equipment for construction, which will require periodic, short-term closure of one lane on East Wayne Avenue between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.  Beginning on Friday, through March 2018, crews will be installing the exterior support walls of the Plymouth tunnel work zone. Piles will be drilled into the soil, and steel support will be put in place for excavation. For information on construction activities, schedules and other updates, please visit www.purplelinemd.com/construction. For immediate construction concerns, please email PLTP outreach@pltcllc.com or call the construction hotline at 240-424-5325.
Construction, Traffic Updates Around Thayer Avenue

PEPCO undergrounding of power conduits and vaults will continue at Thayer Avenue between Mayors Lane and Georgia Avenue. Beginning today, and for the rest of the week, crews working near the corner of Thayer Avenue and Fenton Street will require a lane shift for vehicle traffic and a detour for pedestrians during workday hours. Pedestrians will have access to both sides of the street during most of this phase, and the sidewalk will be open normally each night. In addition, the Pepco undergrounding work will begin down Mayors Lane, starting at Thayer. Flaggers will direct traffic and any open excavations will be plated during non-work hours.

A pedestrian walkway is being constructed from the surface parking lot (part of the former Lot 3) to allow easy access to Thayer Avenue near the Grandesign building (912 Thayer). The walkway will be open to the public within the next two weeks.
