Admission Sales End this Friday, March 16!

Here's a recap of GSSCC advocacy in Annapolis last week:

SB543/SB235/SB359/SB1019 - Labor and Employment - Payment of the Minimum Wage Required - Increase - GSSCC presented testimony expressing concerns about a group of bills that would increase the state minimum wage to $15 per hour over the next few years.  Each bill is slightly different. (Click here to see a comparison.) Taking a position on them is challenging. Montgomery County has already enacted a law that raises the wage to $15 per hour by 2024. Some of the state bills would extend the time when some businesses would have to reach $15, but shorten it for others. The Chamber would support legislation that levels the playing field for all and provides the longest implementation time for all employers. The Chamber also strongly opposed parts of SB543, sponsored by Senator Richard Madaleno, that would eliminate the tip wage. (Currently Montgomery County tipped employees must be paid a minimum of $4 per hour. If their tip income does not bring their wage up to the current minimum wage, employers must make up the difference.) GSSCC will continue to advocate for a bill that is less onerous than current Montgomery County law and push for pre-emption that would assure the "one state, one law" concept.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR - GSSCC County Executive Candidate Forum

The upcoming mid-term election will be a critical one and provides a unique opportunity for voters in Montgomery County. Because a term-limits law was approved in the last election, voters will elect a new County Executive and have the opportunity to elect four brand new At-Large County Council candidates. (Only one incumbent is eligible to run for this office.) Local government matters to business. As Norman Augustine, formerly of Lockheed-Martin, who led a state panel to identify ways to improve Maryland's business climate, said, "You can be for jobs and against employers." GSSCC plans to provide members several opportunities to assess candidates' views on business in the upcoming election. One of these opportunities will be a members-only County Executive Candidates Forum, scheduled for 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, at Montgomery College. The forum will feature those candidates whose races are contested in the June 26 primary. Mark your calendar and click here for more information or to register.
