GSSCC Scores $300k for Silver Spring Urban District

The Silver Spring Urban District will have an extra $300,000 in its FY19 budget, thanks to the Chamber's advocacy efforts.  Earlier this year, GSSCC asked the Montgomery County Council to increase the Urban District budget to provide sufficient funds for sidewalk and streetscape repairs, as well as landscaping and tree maintenance that had been neglected as a result of budget cuts over the years. Since FY10, the budget for the Silver Spring Urban District had increased by a mere net 1 percent, with most of the money going to cover the County's collective bargaining agreements. That meant funds for actual work have decreased over the years, resulting in m ore than a few signs of wear.

GSSCC pointed out that, "Years of being exposed to the elements and lacking regular maintenance, the paint at the base of many of street light poles has eroded away. They need to be sanded, and repainted or replaced. Many of the trash cans throughout the CBD are rusted, battered, and broken, contributing to what some have described as a scuffed and shabby look to the area. They need to be replaced. In addition, many of our sidewalks are in need of repair. These are sidewalks that are the responsibility of the Urban District and not part of a development maintenance agreement. The current budget for trees provides enough money to cut down and remove dead or dying trees, but not enough to replace them. These are cosmetic things, but little things that leave a large impression on someone visiting for the first time, especially someone who would consider bringing his or "her company into one of the largest properties in the community."

Councilmembers listened and allocated a one-time transfer of $300,000 to cover these much needed repairs.
