GW Cardiology Faculty Present at American College of Cardiology
  
GW Cardiology faculty had major presence at the American College of Cardiology's (ACC) 65th Annual Scientific Sessions in Chicago, April 2-4, 2016. The ACC's annual meeting is the largest meeting of cardiology professions in the US with more than 13,000 participants. The following faculty led presentations and workshops this April:
  • Dr. Andrew Choi - Invited lecturer on "Cardiac CT Acquisition" at an ACC Pre-Course sponsored by the Am. Society of Nuclear Cardiology and Society of Cardiac CT's for Cardiology Fellows-In-Training.  
  • Dr. Cynthia Tracy - Served as panel member on "Atrial Fibrillation Stroke Prevention in the Elderly: Current Knowledge, Gaps and Future Directions"
  • Dr. Brian Choi - Presented with Dr. Ramzi Dudum, a 3rd-year medical student, "ACC/AHA Guideline Author Self-Disclosures and the Sunshine Act: Conflicting Reports of Conflicts of Interest"
  • Dr. Steve Farmer - Presented "Impact of Malpractice Damage Cap Reforms on Cardiac Revascularization Rates"
  • Dr. William Borden - Served as Panelist on "Hypertension Guidelines: Putting Theory Into Practice," and Presented "ACO Versus Traditional FFS" in a session entitled "New Payment Models: What Does This Mean for Interventional Cardiology"
  • Dr. Marco Mercader - "Optimizing Electrocardiogram Interpretation and Catheterization Laboratory Activation in ST-Segment Myocardial Infarction. A Teaching Module for Medical Students," was presented by Alex Sullivan, a 3rd-year Medical Student, and Dr. Mortada Shams, incoming GW Cardiology fellow and current chief resident at Fairfax Hospital. Dr. Bassel Hassouna, GW Interventional Cardiology fellow, was also part of the project.   
  • Dr. Gurusher Panjrath - Presented with Dr. Richard Katz: "Community Health Workers Reduce Readmisions in a high Risk Heart Failure Population"
Dr. Panjrath was appointed to the Annual Scientific Session Program Planning Committee for 2017-2019.

GW Cardiology Alumni Attend P. Jacob Varghese Visiting Professor with Dr. Paul Gurbel
  
Graduates of the GW Cardiology Fellowship program joined current cardiology faculty and fellows for the Second Annual P. Jacob Varghese Visiting Professor at the Westin Georgetown on April 27, 2016. Dr. Paul A. Gurbel served as visiting professor and presented "Benefit and Limitations of Antiplatelet Treatment: How can we advance the field?" The alumni reception and lecture was hosted by the GW Cardiology Alumni Committee: Drs. Narian Rajan, Hamid Taheri, and Reza Sanai.  Dr. Gurbel is Director of the Inova Center for Thrombosis Research and Drug Development.

Dr. Marco Mercader Honored by University of Puerto Rico
  
The Association of University of Puerto Rico Alumni and Friends Abroad (UPRAA) presented Dr. Marco Mercader the UPRAA's Excellence and Achievement Award for outstanding accomplishments in medicine at their awards banquet in Arlington, VA, this April.
