GW Cardiology Fellows Graduate this June
This June, GW General Cardiology Fellows and Advanced Cardiology Fellows graduated and will move forward with their careers in medicine. Drs. Gurpreet Sodhi and Ju Kim completed their three-year GW general cardiology fellowship. Dr. Ali Bou-Shahri completed GW's electrophysiology fellowship; and Drs. Bassel Hassouna and Aditya Sharma completed GW's interventional cardiology fellowship.

Dr. Sodhi will continue at GW as an interventional cardiology fellow training under Drs. Mazhari, Reiner, and Nagy. Dr. Kim will begin an advanced heart failure and transplantation fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond. Dr. Hassouna is returning to his home country, Lebanon, to practice at Makassed General Hospital. Dr. Sharma plans to practice in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania region. Dr. Bou-Shahari will practice as an electrophysiologist in his home country, Kuwait. We wish our graduates the best of luck in their careers!

Cardiology Faculty and Fellows Present at American Society of Echocardiography's 27th Annual Scientific Sessions in Seattle, WA, June 10-14
  • Dr. Bianca Ummat, a second-year cardiology fellow, presented "Clinical Implications of Right Heart Strain."
  • Dr. Ju Kim, a third-year cardiology fellow, presented "Use of Handheld Ultrasound in Ambulatory Heart Failure Patients: Relationship to Clinical Assessment and Outcomes."
  • Dr. Brian Choi presented "Frontiers in Cardiac Ultrasound: Limits of Miniaturization."

Dr. Solomon Provides Heart Screening for Young Athletes
Dr. Allen Solomon, and cardiology fellow, Dr. Sanjay Shah, provided free heart screenings to 100 high school and middle school athletes at Albert Einstein High School in Silver Spring, MD, this June. Dr. Solomon has led annual heart screenings of young athletes in Montgomery County for more than a decade.

Dr. Andrew Choi, Co-Director of Cardiac CT and MRI, presented "Prevalence and Predictors of Atherosclerosis in 21st Century Younger Adults: A Cardiac CT Study" in collaboration with Dr. Marcus Chen, Director of Cardiac CT at the National Institutes of Health, and co-author Dr. Richard Katz, Director of Cardiology at GW.

Dr. A. Choi was an invited speaker at a "Read with the Experts" session educating global physicians on Cardiac CT methodology.

Dr. Kaitlin Baron, a first-year cardiology fellow, was recognized for authoring the SCCT Case of the Year: "Cardiac CT in Multi-vessel Coronary Vasospasm with Overlapping Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy."  Co-authors from the GW Team included Drs. James Earls, Jonathan Reiner, Brian Choi, Robert Zeman and Andrew Choi.  This is a tremendous accomplishment for Dr. Baron and our fellowship program gaining national recognition for our Cardiac CT program!
