Hillcreek Yarn Shoppe
presents
Gail Hubbell Memorial Scholarship

I know many of you knew Gail as the wonderful person and master knitter that she was.  She spent many happy hours at Hillcreek and worked here for several years.  I was deeply saddened when she passed and asked her son, Gary Sickel, if we could offer a year's knitting scholarship to learn the craft with the goal of becoming an advanced intermediate knitter.  Gary agreed and donated some funds for us to get started.  Jessica Dekker has agreed to be the instructor.  We have chosen Hope Schaberg as the recepient.

About the Lessons
Since Gail was such a master of so many techniques, the scholarship lessons will focus on becoming familiar with different knitting techniques. We will start with the basics of yarn choice, needle choice, and making swatches to practice stitches and check gauge. Then we'll make small projects that cover a variety of themes: lace, cables, and colorwork. We'll move on to finishing techniques and construction: picking up stitches, seaming, and blocking. This will prepare us to try larger projects that involve more time and materials.  We're so excited to carry on the memory of Gail as we learn together and imagine new projects.

About Jessica
I became a fiber fanatic without really meaning to. As a child, I experimented with crochet, knitting, latch-hook and counted cross stitch. After college, I got my first job at a yarn store, and haven't gone more than a day or two without knitting in about nine years. I love to learn and teach new techniques, and I'm honored to carry on in Gail's tradition of passing on knowledge and skills.

About Hope
Jessica and Hope actually met in Washington, DC when they both lived there. Hope came in to buy yarn at the shop where Jessica was working. Now that we both live back in Columbia, we have a little more time to get together and dive into some challenging projects!

Thank you Gail for all the memories!
We love you!

Note from Karen,

The time has come to say farewell.  It has been a great run.
I purchased Hillcreek in August 2009.  My dream for many years had been to own a yarn shop where needle fanatics could gather to knit and share their lives.  I wanted a place that felt like home and people enjoyed being there.  My dream came true.  I have enjoyed these five years very much.
Life changes and mine has.  My husband and I have sold our last pharmacy and hope to move to Florida next year.  I now live almost 100 miles away from the store and have some health issues. These events caused me to seek someone to purchase the store.
I am so happy to say that I found someone who loves the store as much as I do and is very knowledgeable in the fiber industry.
This week is going to be an emotional one for me but I am happy to welcome  Bex Oliger as the new owner of Hillcreek Yarn Shoppe.  I will be here Thursday and Friday.
Please come by if you get a chance. We will close at 3pm on Friday to begin inventory.
I hope to see you soon.
Please remember to keep on knitting!

Karen
