January 2016
KASD Superintendent Dear KASD Families and Friends,

I hope that your new year has gotten off to an enjoyable start. The New Year certainly brought winter back; the recent low temperatures and icy roads have quickly reminded us that winter is really here! Please take the time to review the Severe Weather and School Closing Information that is included on the KASD District webpage.

And while this time of year brings thoughts of cold weather and hibernation, here at KASD, it also brings the excitement of registration for next school year! Please follow school communications closely for more detailed information. Did you know that, Kaukauna Area School District offers three high-quality early learning programs: at New Directions Learning Community Charter School, Park Community Charter School and, Tanner Early Learning Center? Read more below about the great things that we offer in Kaukauna Public Schools.

Finally, if you know a Senior Citizen who is interested taking the leap into technology, or learning additional computer skills, please share with them the opportunity for the Senior Citizen Computer Class being offered by KHS National Honor Society on January 27, 2016.

Enjoy the Galloping Ghost Stories.

It's Time to Register!
Believe it or not, it's time to begin 4K and 5K registration for the upcoming school year! Registration packets were mailed
on Monday, January 4th. You can also find these forms and additional information
on the district registration page . Forms need to be returned to the Tanner Early Learning Center office by Friday,
February 5th.

We will also be offering informational meetings to help guide parents through the school choices that are offered in Kaukauna. The district has five elementary options, including two charter schools:
  • Tanner Early Learning Center: 4K - grade 1
  • New Directions Learning Community: 4K - grade 4
  • Park Community Charter School: K - grade 4
  • Victor Haen Elementary: grade 1 - grade 4
  • Electa Quinney Elementary: grade 2 - grade 4
The first meeting, held Thursday, January 14th at 6:00 p.m. at Tanner Early Learning Center, will give a general overview of all elementary options within the Kaukauna Area School District.  Please find the dates and times of the school-specific meetings here
KHS Increases Advanced Placement Options for Students
Did you know that KHS Offers 13 AP courses for students to choose from?

Advanced Placement (AP) courses offer students the opportunity to do college-level work while still in high school at a fraction of the cost of taking these courses during college. Students can receive college credit based on their performance on an exam administered at the end of each class. Learn more about all of our new Advanced Placement, along with other potential course options, on the KHS Student Services web page.

Also, if you're interested in AP or other course offerings, don't forget about the KHS Curriculum Fair on January 28th at 6:00 p.m. in the KHS Commons.
State Assessment Data Released
On Wednesday, January 13, the embargo was lifted on the DLM, Badger and ACT assessment data, and we wanted to share some of this news with you, our KASD families and friends. Keep in mind that each of these tests is a snapshot of student achievement, and just a small glimpse of the hard work that occurs every day to promote learning and achieve success for all students in Kaukauna Schools.

We've created a data page on our district website which includes links to your school's data and results. Please visit this page, browse the results, and if you have questions, don't hesitate to contact your school's principal.
HOV Public Schools: Advocates for Success of Every Student, in Every Classroom, Every Day
In the coming weeks, Kaukauna Area School District, in collaboration with Kimberly and Little Chute Public School Districts, will be sending a number of messages about the importance of having great public schools in our community.

In the Heart of the Valley, we understand that each
student  --  whether a Galloping Ghost, a Papermaker or a Mustang --  deserves the opportunity to reach his or her potential. We advocate for success for every student, in
every classroom, every day.

Now, we're asking for your help to share the word about the great things being accomplished in the Heart of the Valley public schools. Please share these messages via email or within your social media communities. Reach out to those people who might not be as close to our schools as you are. We need your help to spread the word and share positive news about public education in our community.

Invest in Kaukauna Strong!

As Kaukauna High School continues to move forward with the new Activities and Athletic Facility, we invite you take a look at the Facility Improvement web page for the latest progress photos and information.

While on that page, don't forget to check out the link to Invest in Kaukauna Strong! The Kaukauna Area School District welcomes you to be a part of Kaukauna history by purchasing a plaque to show your support of the new facility. The plaques, engraved with the names of our fellow Galloping Ghosts and supporters, will proudly be displayed on the donor wall inside the new facility.

Keep the Galloping Ghost legacy rolling ... Invest in Kaukauna Strong!

Checking in with River View
River View's new class schedule was set into motion at the beginning of this school year, and students, teachers and parents alike seemed to gracefully ease into the new routine of four 85-minute classes each day.

The new schedule provides students with not only additional classroom time to dive more deeply into topics of study, but also additional opportunities for practicing new concepts, participating in enrichment courses and getting additional help where it might be necessary.

River View Middle School principal Daniel Joseph believes that the new schedule is leading to strong relationships between students and teachers. "They have more time in the day to get to know each other, and teachers have fewer students, allowing them to really get to know their students and better understand each child's strengths and weaknesses."

I n addition to the advantages to our students, teachers and administrators have expressed that the increase in collaboration time has fostered many productive conversations about teaching and learning, assessments and productive group work for students.
