Jupiter Medical Center to Bring Breast Radiation Therapy Into the Operating Room

Agreement signed with Sordina IORT Technologies USA, Inc.

Jupiter Medical Center announced recently that it has finalized negotiations with Sordina IORT Technologies USA, Inc. (SIT USA), to move forward with the Board approval process to purchase a Liac 12 Mobile Electron Beam IntraOperative Radiation Therapy (e-IORT) Linear Accelerator.

Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) is the delivery of a single fraction of radiation to a tumor or tumor bed during surgery using a linear accelerator or high-dose rate brachytherapy unit. IORT provides specialized treatment for cancer patients, especially women with breast cancer, allowing physicians to deliver a single dose of radiation to patients during their surgery. By delivering radiation at the time the cancerous tissue is removed, one treatment is administered - equivalent of six-weeks of post-operative radiation therapy.

"Women facing a breast cancer diagnosis can rest assured that Jupiter Medical Center's Kristin Hoke Breast Health Program is continually bringing world-class treatment options to our community," said John A.P. Rimmer, MD, Medical Director, Kristin Hoke Breast Health Program.
