Memorial Regional in Broward Approved for Heart Transplants 

 

Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood won federal approval Thursday to begin performing adult heart transplants as soon as this summer, making it the first healthcare facility in Broward County to offer the life-saving procedure.

 

The new program will give patients living in Broward and Palm Beach counties a closer option than Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami-Dade, where surgeons with the Miami Transplant Institute have been performing organ transplants since 1970.

 

Enrique Gongora, MD, a cardiac surgeon who will lead Memorial's new program, said heart transplant rates in South Florida are among the lowest in the state, with many local patients traveling to Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville or out of state for the procedure.

 

"The community has been under served in the past years," Gongora said.

South Florida Healthcare Executive Forum Prepares for Annual Student Case Competition


Broward based South Florida Healthcare Executive Forum, an independent chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives, is gearing up of for its annual Student Case Competition. This year's topic is Population Health and the academic programs presenting are Florida International University, Barry University and Florida Atlantic University. Judging will be handled by a diverse

and experienced group of healthcare veterans including Dr. Eneida Roldan, Associate Dean, International Affairs

Associate Professor, Department of Pathology Course Director, Professional Strand, Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, Florida International University. Opening Remarks will be provided by Keith Gallagher, FACHE, ACHE Regent, District 2 and CEO of Memorial Hospital Pembroke.

 

"Our organization's mission is to improve healthcare delivery by providing opportunities for the professional development of our members through educational and social activities," stated the Forum's President, Barbara Perez Deppman, FACHE. "The Case Competition coupled with the Annual Student Scholarship fund form the foundation of our student mentoring efforts," she added. This year's event will take place on Saturday, April 19, 2014 from 8:00-10:00 am at Aventura Medical Center, Biscayne Medical Arts Building. Continental breakfast will be provided. Admission is complimentary for qualified healthcare professionals.
