Wednesday, March 15, 2:30-3:30pm EST
Brought to you by:
Gamma Iota Sigma and the Society of Actuaries.
Presenter: Laura Bennett, FSA
Many actuaries consider pet insurance not much better than alien abduction insurance - but that's only because they don't know any better. This session will delve into the subtleties of pet insurance and why this product line is worthy of actuarial interest. The conversation will be interwoven with the story of how an actuary jumped from life & health to pet insurance while building a pet insurance company from an idea and a business plan to a rapidly growing private equity-funded company.

Nationwide.
Presenter: Eric Coleman, CPCU
Business insurance is one of the last holdouts in a financial world that has gone from relationship orientation to technological innovation. While relationships are at the heart of any industry, business insurance is now moving forward with models, analytics, and adoption of technology faster than ever before. This session will explain the advancements this industry is experiencing and will evolve toward in the future.

Student Spotlight:
"
It is great to be surrounded by people who share the same passion as you as well as supporting you every step of the way."
Name:
Katherine Sargent
School:
East Carolina University
Chapter:
Beta Theta Chapter
Officer Title:
President
Major:
Finance
Concentration:
Risk Management and Insurance
Graduation:
May 2017
What do you hope to do with your degree?
In June 2017, I will be joining Liberty Mutual in Charlotte, North Carolina in the Underwriting department. I will be a trainee for six-months before stepping into an underwriting role.
Why did you choose to major in Risk Management, Insurance, or Actuarial Science?
I chose RMI as a concentration when I was finishing up my sophomore year because it was something different and from what I had heard the opportunities were endless. I had heard nothing but good things about the faculty and students that were apart of the program. I took Principles of Risk Management and Insurance and knew that this was the right choice and path for my future.
Why did you join Gamma Iota Sigma?
I joined GIS because of their mission to help students who are interested in a field in Risk Management and Insurance. It is great to be surrounded by people who share the same passion as you as well as supporting you every step of the way.
How has your participation in Gamma Iota Sigma prepared you for your career?
I started off in GIS as a director, but once I took on the role of VP and President I learned the value of leading, and supporting others to pursue their dreams in RMI. GIS has unlimited amount of opportunities for students to gain internships and jobs while still a student at a university. The National Convention last year (2016) was a great example how dedicated GIS is to making sure students succeed in the field of RMI.
What would you say to a student interested in joining Gamma Iota Sigma?
Get ready to talk about Insurance! If you enjoy talking about insurance and see yourself having a career in the RMI industry then you will LOVE GIS. It has been helped me in so many ways create a pathway for my future. I have met so many great friends through the RMI program at my school and through GIS, everyone truly cares and is there to support one another.
