Hydrangeas are simply rock stars in the summer garden. Smooth Hydrangeas (
) were featured earlier this month and next up are Panicle Hydrangeas (
). Panicle Hydrangeas are strong, reliable bloomers that contrast with Mophead Hydrangeas (
), which can sometimes flower inconsistently, especially in colder zones (i.e. 5 and 6).
The flowers of Panicle Hydrangeas open white and age to lime-green or lovely shades of pink (the flower color cannot be adjusted by soil pH) and can be dense in habit or lacy, rounded or conical. Some cultivars like ‘Pinky Winky’ and ‘Vanilla Sunday’ have bi-color blooms; the older flowerets at the base will quickly turn pink while newer buds open to pristine white at the tip.
Cultivars range in height from petite (‘Bobo’ only gets 36” tall) to up to 20’.
We have over a dozen gorgeous varieties at Estabrook’s to choose from, all hardy to zone 3 (30 to 40 degrees below zero) or 4 (20 to 30 degrees below zero).
