Abdullahi Ali -
Gateway's Inspirational Leader
“I wanted to create a place where people could come without fear.”
 Abdullahi Ali

Gateway Community Services was formed by Abdullahi Ali with the support of community members and social service professionals in 2014. At Gateway Community Services, we provide counseling, case management and home health care to eligible adults and children with Mainecare. We specialize in offering culturally aware services to refugees and immigrants to help them begin the process of healing and learning to navigate life in Maine. Abdullahi’s experiences as a Somali refugee in Kenya and as a case manager in Maine gave him the skills and knowledge of the system to create an organization where experiences of trauma and dislocation as well as resilience and cultural strengths are honored.
Gateway Programs
Gateway Community Services now has three offices located in Portland, Lewiston, and Augusta. We provide counseling, case management, and home health care services to eligible adults and children with Mainecare and specialize in offering culturally aware services to refugees and immigrants, including people from Somalia, Iraq, Syria, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Djibouti, and Afghanistan.  We see people in our offices, in their homes, and in the community. Interview with Yusuf Yusuf and Noof Alsuking
"I tell all my Iraqi friends about what Yusuf and Noof have done for my family. My son was having trouble in school, my wife has serious medical issues, and we had to move in the middle of winter. My son is 100% better than before and is doing a really great job in school and in life." Gateway Client
Learning the system and finding stability are huge challenges for newly arrived refugees and immigrants in Maine. Gateway Community Services case managers and interpreters like Yusuf Yusuf and Noof Alsuking help clients learn about and access the systems of social welfare that initially support them when they arrive, programs that help immigrants afford housing and food and medical care. Yusuf, a case manager, is originally from Somalia. He arrived in the U.S. in 2007 after living in Syria as a refugee.
