IF you happen to be in Memphis Tennessee, it's worth a visit to Sun Records, the biggest little recording studio, south of the Mason Dixon line. The greatest names in the music business got their start recording there, including Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash.
The folks who work in the studio today will be quick to point out the first true rock and roll song for you. Many people in the industry will agree, it was Ike Turner's "Rocket 88", that set the whole scene in motion. Ike met the founder of Sun Studios, Sam Philips, by way of no other than B.B. King, who gave the 19 year old, a good recomendation.
The tune was written while Ike drove down the famous Highway 61, from Mississippi, into Memphis. Inspired by the long road, he came up with the lyrics about a young fellow who dreamed of escorting a pretty girl on a ride, in one of the hottest cars around back then, an Oldsmobile 88.
The name of Ike's group was "The Kings Of Rhythm", and the lead singer was Jackie Brenston, who took good care of the vocals. On the road into town, one of the bands speakers got wet, and Ike stuffed some paper into the bad woofer. The sound that came out was something special.
The song went big on the R&B charts, but only Jackie Brenston's name went on the record label. Not until Bill Haley and the Comets took the song to the pop charts in the late 1950's, did Ike get any credit for writing the words.
We have gathered up a few of the better car tunes, to come from the music industry, over the years. Because after grabbing first gear, what's the first thing you always reached for, other than the AM radio knob?
Because cars, girls, and music were all a guy really needed back before morgages, kids, and responsibility. Unless You lived it, you simply cannot know what it was all about.
It's not surprising that hot rodders, bikers, racers, and rock & rollers, have a few things in common. Not following the elders acceptable guide lines is one. The need for wind, speed, fredom, and adventure, is another.
Guess there are a few things in life, that those pom pom girls, and fancy kids from high school, just plan missed out on. In the darkness on the edge of town, that is.
Sincerely,
The Crew
