Evan Reis
Executive Director, Co-Founder
U.S. Resiliency Council
|
The will to act, even when it is unpopular, is a sign of leadership, but great leadership is acting even when the benefits may not accrue for years or decades. When it comes to preparing for natural disasters, building and business owners, the financial sector, and our community, state and national leaders are not leading if they kick the can down the road to avoid short term pain, leaving the problem to future generations. Resilience, the ability to recover quickly from adverse events, needs to be everyone’s responsibility; each generation of leaders needs to contribute in a meaningful way to this mission. Evan Reis, Executive Director of the US Resiliency Council, will talk about how the USRC is helping leaders take positive steps toward making our communities more resilient.

Sandpoint Junction Connector Will Keep Freight Rolling
|
|
BNSF is always enhancing its network to deliver the goods needed to fuel the economy.
That’s why we are proposing to build the Sandpoint Junction Connector Project at Sandpoint, Idaho. The project involves building a second rail bridge across Lake Pend Oreille right next to the existing bridge – creating a second mainline track to move current freight and future volumes more efficiently.
The project will reduce rail congestion for freight and Amtrak trains which will be able to run in both directions at the same time, reducing the wait time for trains to use the bridge. Not only that, but keeping trains moving means less delay at crossings for motorists.
At BNSF, we’re proud of our role in helping Idaho’s agriculture, timber and other industries grow in today’s global economy. We link them to domestic and international markets, and we support them by delivering materials vital to their operations.
In addition, BNSF helps deliver a wide variety of consumer products to Idaho retailers and businesses, including packaged goods, clothes, appliances, electronics, and automobiles. In all, BNSF moves more than 1.4 million carloads of freight in Idaho annually.
Rail is the most sustainable mode of land freight transportation. One of our double-stack intermodal trains can haul the equivalent of 280 trucks, reducing emissions and road congestion.
BNSF invested more than $55 million improving its infrastructure in Idaho last year.
The company employs more than 500 people throughout the North Idaho/Spokane area.
