The 2013 Expenditures on Children by Families Report

It costs a lot being a parent. It's especially expensive for grandparents raising grandchildren. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) new report says just as much. According to Expenditures on Children by Families, 2013 (see infographics: one, two, three and four), a middle-income family with a child born in 2013 can expect to spend from birth to adulthood about $245,340 ($304,480 adjusted for projected inflation) for food, housing, childcare and education as well as other expenses. Intergeneration Month: September and All Ages Together Campaign

As Intergeneration Month: September approaches, it's not too early to begin thinking of ways to celebrate the connecting of generations during the month, along with special support and acknowledgment for Grandparents Day on September 7th.  Intergeneration Foundation encourages special celebrations throughout the Month of September - thoughtful action every day - in any way that intentionally connects generations. That's why they launched the "All Ages Together Campaign," a new effort of collecting and posting on their website, ways in which generations come together.  Share your personal celebration plans and find new ways to celebrate Intergeneration Month. Learn more

In the News
In his talk to the Australian Human Rights Commission last week, Professor Henry Brodaty, a leading researcher on aging and dementia, challenged Australian to replace the idea of intergenerational competition for resources with "cross-generational" resource allocation and greater opportunities for collaboration. Read "Call to recognise economic contribution of seniors."
