Generations United on NPR
NPR's Morning Edition and Jennifer Ludden did a segment, "When Grandma's House Is Home: The Rise Of Grandfamilies," which includes an interview with Donna Butts on the number of grandparents raising grandchildren. "Many of the grandparents - about 58 percent," Donna said, "are still working, so trying to juggle taking care of a child." Learn more |
Congrats to Marcus Mariota and Hawaii!
Marcus Mariota, the first Hawaiian to win the Heisman Trophy, explained what we hope to learn from Hawaiians during our 2015 conference
Intergenerational Action on a Global Scale, July 21-24, 2015, in Honolulu, Hawai'i. "Ohana means family - that's it right there," Mariota said. "In Hawaii, if one person is successful, the entire state is successful. To be a part of that, it's so special." Take advantage of early registration at the advanced rate (until Dec.31). Don't miss out on our incredible line-up that includes pre-conference/site visits, inspiring keynotes, motivating educational sessions, culture-based and environmental action projects and more. Are You Fearless Enough to Be an Elder? Yesterday was Margaret Mead's birthday. Donna Butts remembers the famous anthropologist in a new Huffington Post blog while also honoring the role older adults play in quality early education. "Mead, who was born 113 years ago today," Donna wrote, "believed that 'somehow, we have to get older people back close to growing children if we are to restore a sense of community, knowledge of the past, and a sense of the future.'" Request for Grandfamilies
A producer with a national TV show, which covers today's hottest financial topics, is seeking grandfamilies (grandparents, or other older adults, raising children) for a possible segment on how such households can avoid, or get out of, debt. The grandfamilies must be willing to fill out a full financial disclosure* and appear on camera. The show's host, an internationally-acclaimed personal finance expert, will offer the grandfamily advice to help them avoid, or get out of, debt. If you would like to recommend a family, please pass along their name and contact information to Generations United's Communications Specialist Alan King. *Filling out the financial disclosure doesn't guarantee the grandfamily will be on the show.

Up
Carl Fredricksen is a widower and retired balloon salesman, who's ready to travel the world in his flying house. With thousands of balloons tied to his roof and front porch, he sets off to see the world. When Carl discovers Russell, an 8-year-old stowaway, he's at first irritated. But the young boy scout grows on the 78-year-old. Along the way to Paradise Falls, the two embark on an adventure, encountering a talking dog and a 13-foot tall flightless bird. The world's most unlikely duo find a sense of purpose in each other's lives.
Do you know of any films, books, music and TV shows with an intergenerational theme? Share them with us and we'll share in the weeks and months to come. Disclaimer: Inclusion in this section is not an endorsement from Generations United. Rather, it is a way of showing the multiplying impact when the arts and pop culture are age-advantaged.
