Grand Partners in Education Family Engagement Toolkit
Learn how to tap the time and talent of grandparents to jumpstart or enhance family engagement in schools. This week Generations United, in partnership with the Center for Law and Education and Grandfamilies PTSA, released the Grand Partners in Education toolkit featuring tips, tools and learning from a two-year intergenerational family engagement pilot project. The event, which will honor this year's MetLife Foundation/Generations United Best Intergenerational Communities, will feature remarks from Dennis White (MetLife Foundation), Marian Wright Edelman (Children's Defense Fund), and Jim Firman (National Council on Aging). Celebrate National my Social Security Week
As part of Financial Literacy Month, National my Social Security Week is April 4-13. It is designed to encourage workers to open a my Social Security account, which provides estimates of future benefits to help with financial planning. The Social Security Administration is distributing a toolkit with ready-to-use content to help raise awareness about the accounts.

NIH Report Shows Spike in Aging Population                

A new National Institutes of Health report, "An Aging World: 2015," places the world's population of people age 65 and older at 8.5 percent, or 617 million. That percentage is expected to increase to nearly 17 percent by 2050. The report also examines the demographic, health and socioeconomic trends accompanying the growth of the aging population.

Becoming Grandma
In her  new  book , Becoming Grandma: The Joys and Science of the New Grandparent i ng , 60 Minutes reporter Lesley Stahl dives into the experience of being a  grandparent. Stahl shares  stories about her and her husband's adventures as g randparents and those of celebrity colleag ues and friends. S he also explores the science behind grandparenting: the therapeutic effects it has on grandparents, the anthropological roots of grandparenting, and the physiological changes that occur when one becomes a grandparent. Lesley also reaches out to prominent intergenerational programs, including   Hope Meadows   and the GrandParent Family Apartments.
Stahl was recently in a news segment on CBS News promoting her book, where she spoke about, among other things, the increasing role that grandparents are playing in caring for their grandchildren while their parents work.

Valuing Vaccines Across Generations

Generations United is pleased to announce that the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is partnering with us on our   Valuing Vaccinations Across Generations   campaign ( #BandAGEofhonor ). AAP will contribute the guidance of those keeping our nation's youth healthy. The Gerontological Society of America also partners on this project, which is supported by Pfizer. Youth Pays Off the Mortgage of Grandparents Who Raised Him
A 24-year-old college student raised by his grandparents saved $15,000 over the past six years to pay off his grandparents' mortgage and show his gratitude to them for caring for him. The National Human Services Assembly (NHSA), a Generations United member, has named Lee Sherman as its new president and CEO. Read more about the announcement here.

CARE Special Delivery

CARE, a nonprofit founded in 1945 that 

provides disaster relief around the world, has sought to provide support to Syrian 

refugee children through its Special Delivery program. Special Delivery has

former World War II refugees write letters to connect with Syrian refugee children. Learn more.

Youth Opportunity Fund Grants

Citi Foundation and America's Promise Alliance are awarding one-year grants of up to $250,000 in 10 major cities that will launch or expand innovative programs that prepare low-income young adults, 16 to 24, for continuing education, careers and lifelong success. Deadline: May 2, 2016. Learn more

The Community-Police Partnership Awards, sponsored by the MetLife Foundation and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), recognize, sustain, and share the work of innovative partnerships between community groups and police to promote neighborhood safety and revitalization. Awards ranging from $15,000 to $20,000 are provided in 9 different categories, including Blight Reduction; Civic Engagement; School-Based Programs; and Gang Prevention and Youth Safety. Capital Grants for Education and Healthcare in Seventeen States
The Gladys Brooks Foundation provides support to nonprofit organizations located in the seventeen states.The Foundation focuses its grantmaking on libraries, educational institutions, and hospitals and clinics in the targeted states. Grant applications will be considered only for major expenditures, generally between $50,000 and $100,000. Funds are intended to be used for capital projects, including equipment and endowments. Deadline: May 31, 2016. Learn more

EPA Environmental Education Grants. The EPA will  give   grants nationwide to  projects that promote environmental awareness and stewardship. Each of the 30 grants has a maximum award of $91,000. Deadline: April 8, 2016.  Learn more

Innovations in American Government Awards.  Harvard Kennedy School's Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation is offering the $100,000  Roy and Lila Ash Innovations Award for Public Engagement in Government , a special Innovations Award that will recognize government-led programs that demonstrate novel and effective approaches to increasing public engagement and participation in the governance of towns, cities, states, and the nation.  Deadline: April 15, 2016.   Learn more
