United We Thrive: The Power of Intergenerational Unity
Join Generations United and The Eisner Foundation on Tues., May 16, 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at The National Press Club in Washington, DC, as we discuss the critical  importance of solidarity across generations for building stronger, more cohesive communities.  The program, emceed by journalist and political analyst Juan Williams, will include t he Eisner Foundation's presentation of the Eisner Prize for Intergenerational Excellence. 2017 Family Award Ceremony
Last week, the International Federation for Family Development (IFFD) honored Donna Butts with their 2017 Award for families and intergenerational solidarity! The award was presented at United Nations Headquarters during IFFD's briefing, "Leaving no one behind: Promoting child inclusion through quality education for all." Donna accepted the award as affirmation of work done by Generations United and as inspiration for the work left to do. See additional photos.

  • The Pew report cited a Census Bureau stat from a Generations United's report that 21 percent of grandparents caring for grandchildren are living below poverty line. In addition, about 39 percent are over the age of 60 and 26 percent have a disability. Read the article
     
  • The new edition of the Adult Vaccination Newsletter highlights our Valuing Vaccinations Across Generations campaign, which expanded to Japan and Spain. Read more
     
  • In a piece for the Confederation of Meningitis Organisations' blog, Generations United pointed out that despite wanting to protect their children, the number of adults fully vaccinated remains low. Learn more
Nominations Now Open for the 2017 AARP Purpose Prize Award - Deadline: May 12th
Nominate a colleague, a friend, even yourself for the 2017 AARP Purpose Prize, which will present $50,000 to five extraordinary individuals ages 50 and older who are using their life experience to make a better future for all ages.  Established in 2005 by Encore.org, the Purpose Prize transitioned to its new home at AARP in 2016.  Learn more
St. Ann's Wins Large Grant!
Congratulations to our 2017 Global Intergenerational Conference partner, St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care Inc., which won a $5 million grant from Gov. Scott Walker! The money will help St. Ann finish its Bucyrus Campus, where infants and octogenarians mix. Learn more

Pamphlet Shows the Importance of Vaccinations Across the Lifespan
This pamphlet - which features characters from the manga, Cells at Work - is part of our Valuing Vaccinations Across Generations  campaign, which we expanded to Japan through a partnership with the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute on Gerontology. Beginning in the United States, through partnerships with the Gerontological Society of America and the American Academy of Pediatrics with support from Pfizer, the campaign expanded to two other countries in late 2016. Generations United is working with the  Tokyo Metropolitan Institute on Gerontology in Japan and the University of Granada in Spain to lead the work in their countries. PoPo's Lucky Chinese New Year
Last month, we celebrated the Chinese New Year and kicked off the Year of the Rooster. PoPo's Lucky Chinese New Year gives the backstory of the Lunar New Year. Upon PoPo's arrival from China, she - along with her granddaughter - begin preparing for the holiday. "I liked the idea of having the grandmother teach her little granddaughter," the author Virginia Loh-Hagan told NBC News. "Culture changes, it evolves - but most importantly, it's passed down, it's shared, it's a collective experience. I wanted to capture that in my book." Learn more

The Silverback Society
This week's cool idea is the Silverback Society, a New Orleans-based nonprofit that supports, trains and coordinates over 150 older adult men who volunteer and are committed to making a positive impact on more than 600 boys and young men. Learn more

Think Intergenerational - Funding Opportunities
2017 RSVP Expansion Competition. The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) seeks to increase the impact of national service in one or more counties across the country. Funding priorities include Education - Intergenerational Programming, which require applicants to address ways to increase older adult engagement with young people in the areas of school readiness and K-12 success.  Notice of Intent Deadline: March 7, 2017. Application Deadline: April 4, 2017. Learn more

2017 Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Program. The National Foster Youth Institute is accepting submissions from youth who experienced foster care (18-30 years old) across the United States with leadership potential and a drive for change. Individuals who are interested in using their voices to improve the foster care system for all youth and families are encouraged to apply. Deadline: March 5, 2017. Learn more

JAMS Foundation/NAFCM Community Mediation Mini-Grant Program. The 2017 Mini-Grant Program will focus on funding the development and refinement of innovative and emerging community mediation center services that will address services for the elder population and care issues. Mini-Grants of $12,000 for up to two years will be awarded to up to five organizations. Deadline: March 13, 2017. Learn more

Brookdale Relatives As Parents Program (RAPP). The Brookdale Foundation Group has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the creation or expansion of supportive services to grandparents and other relatives raising children. Up to 15 programs will be selected to receive a seed grant of $15,000 ($10,000 and $5,000 respectively), contingent upon progress made during year one and potential for continuity in the future. Deadline: June 15, 2017. Learn more

This report from the National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI) represents a first-ever comprehensive assessment of the current state of our nation's social insurance infrastructure and also offers potential new directions for modernizing social insurance to address growing risks facing the American people. National Research Agenda on Libraries, Learning & Teens 2017-2021.  This report from the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) challenges libraries to re-envision teen services in ways that recognize the resources available to libraries as well as the changing needs, and demographics, and information practices of today's teen population. Additionally, significant developments in technology led to the need to rethink how services for and with teens are best designed and delivered. Learn more
