World Humanitarian Day - Aug. 19
Yesterday, despite the unrest in Ferguson, MO, we applauded the display of humanitarian spirit in the community. Generations United thanks the church leaders, who, in the days following the police shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, teamed up and are now acting as neighborhood peacemakers. Read more

GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy

The editors and managing staff launched the first edition of GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy, which includes a policy article from Ana Beltran, special advisor of Generations United's National Center on Grandfamilies. In addition to articles, the journal features reviews on issues related to grandparents raising grandchildren. The editors welcome feedback. Check out the online journal.

New Intergenerational Programs Directory

San Diego County, California, became a 2012 Generations United Best Intergenerational Communities Awards winner for good reason: its commitment to making life better for all generations. Check out the Health and Human Services Agency's Aging & Independence Services directory of the county's intergenerational efforts that includes a summary of each program along with its goals, objectives, outcomes, funding sources, and contact information. Child Trends' New Measurement of Youth

Child Trends' recent Flourishing Children Project publication, Flourishing Children: Defining and Testing Indicators of Positive Development, describes the process used to develop adolescent age-appropriate research scales. Learn more

You can help us raise awareness and recognize the role that older Americans, whether grandparents or not, play in the lives of children and youth. Check out our social media toolkit for scheduled days to share sample tweets, Facebook posts and newsletter items through your networks. Help us get Grandparents Day 2014 on Google Doodle! Funding Opportunities

Family Volunteer Day Grants. GenerationOn, with generous support from Disney Friends for Change, is giving out $1,000 grants and event day service kits to affiliates or nonprofit organizations around the country. Deadline: Sept. 4, 2014. Learn more
 
 

Foundation Grants. The Safeway Foundation supports nonprofits providing services in four priority areas: hunger relief, education, health and human services, and assisting people with disabilities.  Deadlines: quarterly and biannual. Learn more
