Portion Controlled Meals Help to Promote Weight Loss

Researchers at Cornell University devised a study that looked at whether or not people were able to self-regulate the amount of food that they consumed. They also wanted to see if eating a portion controlled lunch would have any effect on weight loss. They were interested to see if, by eating a smaller lunch, the participants would compensate by eating a larger dinner.

In this study, 17 participants were monitored for 5 weeks. All of the participants ate lunch from a buffet for the first week. They got to eat whatever they wanted and however much they wanted. For the next two weeks, some of the participants got to choose from several available portion-controlled food products. All of the participants ate the portion controlled foods for the final two weeks.

The participants who consumed the portion-controlled lunches consumed an average of 250 calories less per day than when they atefrom the buffet. They lost an average of 1.1 pounds over the course of 10 days. This weight loss indicates that they did not eat more for dinner because of eating a smaller lunch. The researchers pointed out that this reduction in calories could result in a substantial amount of weight loss over the course of a year. They also noted “The results confirm that humans do not regulate energy intake with any precision”. When our portions are not controlled, we are less able to regulate how much we consume.

Of note, the shakes and bars that are available at any of the Georgia Bariatrics locations are portion-controlled. They are an excellent way to regulate how much you consume. They are tasty and make great meal replacements.
