November Collaborative Webinar: Leveraging National Mentoring Month
Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013
1-2:15 p.m., EDT

November 1, 2013
During the month of November, Take Stock in Children would like to thank you -- our stakeholders across Florida. Whether you are an alumni, mentor, family or staff member, partner, sponsor, state legislator, leadership council or board member, your investment and participation in our organization is invaluable. Together, we have changed more than 22,600 lives in Florida. Every action you take to support Take Stock in Children helps to build a bridge for our deserving low-income students to overcome poverty and achieve their dreams.

A few easy ways to get involved during November is to  participate in GIVE MIAMI DAY on November 20, 2013. This is a unique 24-hour dollar for dollar match online giving event. We are setting our community goal to raise $10,000 to support deserving, low-income students in Miami and throughout Florida. Make a pledge today on Facebook using #GiveMiami4TSIC.

Another way to get involved is to sign up to be a Take Stock in Children mentor. We pair good students who have the odds stacked against them with mentors who provide the support, encouragement, and guidiance they need to succeed in school. As a mentor, you'll spend just one hour a week with your student -- at a time as convenient as your lunch break. From that one hour, you'll make a difference that will last a lifetime. For more information about mentoring, click here.

Mentor Spotlight: Zabrina Penton

Zabrina Penton is a wife, mother, career woman, and mentor. She chose to become a Take Stock in Children mentor for the Volusia County program because she felt that it was a great way of helping students stay focused in school and succeed in a career. She also found it to be a great way of giving back to the community. Zabrina and her family say it is very important to be involved in the community by making a positive impact on childrens' lives. One of the main things that attracted Zabrina to mentoring for Take Stock in Children was that she knew firsthand the importance of going to college and earning a degree. Click here to read the full story.
Gear Up for Strides for Education

Another great way to get engaged with TSIC this month is to support a Strides for Education 5K event in your neighborhood. Lace up your sneakers and join thousands in Florida to raise more than $1 Million for scholarships by signing up now for the 3rd Annual Strides for Education event in your community! Register Now!

Student Success Story -- Jeffery Day
TSIC Santa Rosa Program
Jeffery Day labeled himself a failure in 9th grade when he did not pass to the 10th grade. With no other options available, his mom sent him to military school. Jeffery made a promise to his mom to change his behavior if he could return home and attend his neighborhood high school. He was invited to become a Take Stock in Children Scholar and his life as a student forever changed. Three years later, he graduated with honors from Gulf Breeze High School while doing dual enrollment and is now attending the University of North Florida.  Find out more about Take Stock in Children and how our program works.
Submit Your Nomination for TSIC Mentor of the Year
In celebration of our mentors' contributions across the state, Take Stock in Children will once again recognize a Mentor of the Year who exemplifies the spirit of mentoring:  giving of their time and wisdom to help young people succeed in school and life.  Local Take Stock in Children chapters across Florida are invited to nominate one mentor whose volunteer story will serve as an inspiration to others.  A committee of Take Stock in Children board members and donors will select the third annual "Mentor of the Year" and that mentor will be recognized at our Annual Leadership & Advocacy Conference in Tallahassee,
February 11-13, 2013.

Please submit the attached Mentor Nomination Form for
one volunteer from your local program. The deadline to submit nominations is November18th. If you have additional questions or need more information, don't hesitate to e-mail or call me Anna Taylor at a [email protected]

We Say Goodbye to Polk's Longtime Student Advocate -- Teresa Choquette
Teresa Choquette started with the Polk Education Foundation in 1998 and started working with Take Stock in Children as a student advocate shortly after. Teresa's dedication and hard work made her the perfect person for the position. Teresa never let an obstacles in her student's lives detour them from succeeding. If a student was having academic or behavior issues, or needed school supplies or a tutor, Teresa made the right contacts and connections to provide her students with what they needed to succeed.  Teresa's claim to fame program is Polk's signature event -- TSIC Scholar Dollar Auction. The event motivates students throughout the year to earn Scholar Dollars. At the end of the year, the students and their families get to use the "dollars" they earned to buy auction prizes. Teresa leaves big shoes to fill not only with her students at the Polk program but as a valued staff person at Take Stock in Children.
