January 2012 Vol. 1 No. 3
|
The national 2012 McMahon Fiber Art Symposium will examine trends in contemporary fiber art on Saturday, January 21st. The symposium, now in its third year, was named in honor of the late SSA Trustee Debbie McMahon, a devoted fiber artist who studied here. Exhibiting artist Sonya Clark will be joined by curator Namita Gupta Wiggers and art historian Dr. Jenni Sorkin.

Sonya Clark's extemporaneous talk, entitled "From Hair to There, and Back Again," will include observations about textiles and hairdressing as signs, symbols and language. She'll talk about the stories that can be embedded in everyday, common objects, and consider an artist's material choices in terms of cultural references and aesthetics.
Clark was recently awarded a $50,000 fellowship by United States Artists, one of only 50 given annually to artists of extraordinary talent. Her works have been exhibited internationally and throughout the US in museums such as UCLA's Fowler Museum, The Indianapolis Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African Art. She is currently chair of the Craft/Material Studies Department at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Richmond.
Namita Gupta Wiggers, curator at the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, and author of a critical essay about Sonya Clark in the exhibition catalog, will present a talk entitled "Tangle, Knot and Threads". She'll focus on the work of contemporary fiber artists, including Clark, and will also hone in on specific trends in contemporary fiber
Dr. Jenni Sorkin, an educator and respected art and culture commentator, will moderate the afternoon's discussions, and contribute her own original observations on gender and material culture. Sorkin is an Assistant Professor of Contemporary Art and Critical Studies at the University of Houston.
Following the afternoon's presentations and panel discussion will be an artists' reception from 4:00P - 5:00P for attendees to continue the conversation. The symposium and reception are free and open to the public; registration is not required. (But see info about parking lot access in the item below...)

Parking Lot Notice: Alternate Entrance

The City of San Antonio is starting a sidewalk project that will close Augusta Street from Navarro to Giraud for a few months -- meaning that our parking lot access from Augusta will be blocked.
However, the PARKING LOT REMAINS OPEN FOR STUDENTS AND VISITORS -- it just means that you'll have to enter the lot via Club Giraud's entrance, 707 N. St. Mary's St., until the project is complete. We have signs posted directing guests to our lot; your patience during this time is appreciated.
