Welcome to the Steinberg Behavior Solutions Newsletter!
Each month features a different topic on behavior and children. This month's topic is Getting the Most out of ABA Therapy. Read on for more on this subject. We look forward to your questions and feedback!
From Sarah, Our Director:
Sarah Pic
The key to getting the most out of ABA therapy is to remember that we are all a team.  It takes a village to raise a child and all the more so do we all need to unite to help a child with Autism.  Weekly team meetings are the perfect time to connect with your child's therapist and get an update on the current skills being taught and specific ways that you can generalize those skills throughout the day and across a variety of natural environment settings.  The real key to your child's success is the amount that you are able to generalize skills learned in therapy to the natural environment and provide many more teachable moments for your child.  Practice makes perfect.

Remember that your therapist is working very hard and committing his/her heart and brain to help your child learn as much as possible.  A small thank you goes a long way.
Go team!

From Our Blog:
Helping Your Child (and you) Get the Most From ABA Therapy

Do you ever wonder why you receive rave reviews from your child's teacher/therapists about his good behavior during therapy sessions, but fail to see the improvements at home? Or have you ever been in a situation where the therapist tells you that your child learned a new skill, but you have yet to see it when the therapist leaves? This often is a result of differing expectations in the school/therapy and home setting. As parents, you have the incredible ability to increase your child's skills even when a therapist is not present. Although your child may benefit from their therapy sessions with a BCBA or ABA therapist, learning opportunities are endless and continue to present themselves 24/7. As a parent, it is often your job to capitalize on these opportunities and promote smooth transitions between what is expected of your child in therapy or school, and what is expected of your child at home. There are many ways that you can learn how to incorporate basic ABA principles into your home life, so that your child is provided with the consistency she needs to develop and maintain the skills she is learning.

From Our Blog: Augmentative/Alternative Communication

For those of you who do not know, May is speech and hearing month! This is a very important topic in the world of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as one of the core characteristics of a person with ASD is impairment with communication. This also affects another common characteristic - deficits in social interaction. Both of these characteristics are essential to improved quality of life for all human beings, including your child with ASD.
