Dear Friends,
Last Sunday, Bridget Alexander gave a wonderful reflection at the Celtic Service comparing New Year's resolutions to intentions. She mentioned the many ways we use the word "resolve" and how often it implies some sort of conflict. I was thinking about resolutions and how they imply we are in complete control of outcomes, which if you live in reality, you realize it a fantasy.
New Year Intentions: These seem more like pathways, ways to add meaning. Intentions involve motivations rather than outcomes. One doesn't usually consider an unmet intention as a failure or weakness, only one not yet fully achieved. Intentions opens one up to the unforseeable, offering a context for the future.
I am not doing Bridget's reflection justice here. I encourage you to come and hear these wonderful meditations on life that are offered each week. I hope you intend to make it some time soon!
- Debbie

This Sunday, the first in Epiphanytide, we celebrate stars, magi and baptism.
At 9:00 am, Young and the Restless will sing about the Epiphany star. We'll hear how this light brought people to the place where Jesus lay.
At the 10:30 am service, we will have a visit from the three magi as we bring our own gifts that we have bought for Grace Church. In fact, we could use a little more incense ourselves! Church School will begin its second semester at 10:30 too.
At the 5:00 pm service, we hear the story of the Baptism of Jesus and our own adoption as children of God. As we reaffirm our baptism, we may ask for a new name for the moment, one that speaks to God's love for us. This is Bridget's last Sunday with us for a few months while she continues her faith journey in India. We will send her off with prayers and blessings.
Please join us wherever you are in your search for meaning.

Last year, we took time to purchase gifts for Jesus, well
for Jesus' mission at Grace Church. It started with Christopher Patzke showing up with a beautifully wrapped present for Grace Church that turned out to be a new Episcopal flag for the front door. Others bought shovels and ice melt, books for the children to use during worship, gift certificates to Home Depot and Staples, paper for the copier. We are continuing this new tradition again this year. When the three kings stop by Grace on their way home from Bethlehem on Sunday, January 8, we too will offer gifts for our King, whose work we do in and outside this sacred place.
Some suggestions:
light weight step ladder for the Altar Guild
incense
port for communion
coffee
coffee hour supplies (cups, stirrers, sugar, napkins, etc.)
materials for the Abundant Life Garden Project (seeds, starter kits, stakes)
cash or VISA gift cards
gluten free flour for bread
K-cups coffee
high quality staplers
Bic or Scripto fireplace lighters
books and crayons for children
charcoal for incense
forever stamps

Jennifer Mitchell Reardon

Jenny Reardon died on Christmas Eve following complications from a stroke. Jenny brought her generous spirit to many in Salem through her work with the Y, HAWC and other non-profits in the city; but most especially to musicians and music lovers. As owner of "In a Pig's Eye," she made a welcoming place for strangers to become friends while supporting new and established musical talent. She will be sorely missed.
Debbie is officiating at a service for Jenny this Saturday, January 7th at 10:00 am at Blake Chapel at Harmony Grove Cemetery. At noon on Saturday, the celebration of her life will continue at Murphy's Pub.
Please keep Jenny's family in your prayers during this difficult time.
May her soul and the souls of all the departed
rest in peace.

Debbie's mother turned 90 on Christmas Day! She and her brother are hosting a family birthday party for her in Williamsburg, Virginia. She will be gone from next Tuesday until Wednesday the 18th. Please call St. Peter's Beverly at 978-922-3438 with any pastoral emergencies.

Get those recipes ready! Following the Annual Meeting, there will be our annual potluck lunch. Come and share those recipes you've been perfecting over the year. Childcare will be provided for children so all may participate in this meal!
