We've changed our name to Troop Edition, (formerly E-edition) and expanded  distribution to include our Girl Scout Troop Leaders. This weekly newsletter will continue to inform you of the many exciting programs and events offered throughout the Council. We hope you enjoy receiving Troop Edition. Past issues are available on our Council's website

Troop Edition includes many opportunities offered by outside vendors. The Council has not inspected these programs or vendors, and there are no Council representatives at these events.
 

 

 2014 Girl Scout Art Contest

At Girl Scouts Nation's Capital, We are Family and we want to see what your Girl Scout family looks likes. Show us how your Troop, Service Unit, or Association bonds together like a family to create the best Girl Scout experience. Be creative, send your drawing, painting, photo or graphic design and enter the We are Family Girl Scout Art Contest.

 

Maybe it's an image of your troop, or show us how your family is involved-maybe your mom leads your troop meetings, your dad drives you to Girl Scout meetings and trips, or does Grandma help with Cookie Booths?

 

We want to see your Girl Scout Family in action though art- paint, draw, graphic design or photography. Be creative!

 

Selected art will be on exhibit at Girl Scout events and displayed at the Pepco Gallery during Girl Scout Week, March 10-14.

 

Deadline: Friday January 3, 2014

 

 Rules:

-Contest is only open to registered Girl Scouts of the Nation's Capital girl members. 
-You can submit as an individual or troop. 
-Label your artwork with the artist's name, age, city, state, Service Unit, Troop Number, email, phone number and Troop Leader's information. 
-Your artwork must be no larger than 24 in. x 18 in. 
-Finalists will be notified that they made the top 10. 
- All artwork becomes the property of Girl Scouts Nation's Capital. 

-Artwork will be judged on creativity, representation of " We are Family" with consideration of all Girl Scout levels.

When a precocious young girl meets a perky and playful elf, all kinds of chaos ensue as New Yorkers and North Pole elves alike race to put everything back as it belongs before Santa's late night flight! "Switching Christmas"... a toe tapping Broadway style musical for all audiences and all ages!

 

Special Girl Scout program includes: A walk-on role for entire troop opportunity; discounted tickets; behind-the-scenes tour (1 hour before show); meet the cast; intermission snack; and pre-seating in theatre.

 

Cost: $18 per person.  TIckets go on sale October 1st

Victorian Greeting Card Workshops at the Clara Barton National Historic Site
 
Who: Girl Scouts of All Levels Victorian Greeting Card Workshop

Clara Barton is an excellent role model for young girls.  These workshops are a fun and exciting way to learn about her role in American history.  Combine the workshop with a free tour of Clara Barton's home.  Experience how she lived and worked as president of the American Red Cross, then dress up in the period dress of her times, be photographed, and craft a holiday card in the style of her Christmas cards.  Clara Barton did not decorate the house for the holidays, but she sent hundreds of cards during the season.  Period costumes for adult leaders and boys as well.  Participants keep their card and receive a digital file of their photographs.  Fun for all, but reservations required.

Wonders of Water Journey Workshop

 
Who: Girl Scout Brownies Wonders of Water

  

When: November 9th, 2013, 1:00pm-4:00pm


Where: Camp Potomac Woods, Lucketts, VA  

Girls will learn to love, save and share water while working on parts of the Wonders of Water Journey!


After the workshop the girls will take home a resource that will help them complete the Journey with their troop.  

Troops should register a first aider and meet the girl/adult ratio in Volunteer Essentials. Registration costs include materials, snack and the WOW! Wonders of Water Journey Awards.

Girl Scout Brownie Financial Literacy Workshop


Who: Girl Scout Brownies  Capital One Financial Fitness Challenge

  

When: November 9th, 10:00am to 11:30am


Where: Camp Potomac Woods, Lucketts, VA  

 

Girl Scout Brownies will be working on the Money Manager badge and the Philanthropist badge!

 

Troops should register a first aider and meet the girl/adult ratio in Volunteer Essentials. Registration costs include materials, snack and the badges. 

 

Fee:  $17/girl $3/adult

Junior Get Moving at the Philadelphia Zoo

Who:  Girl Scout JuniorsPhiladelphia Zoo

What: Get Moving (Energize and Investigate Awards)

Through hands-on games, learn how animals are affected by climate change and how we can help to save them! Become an energy detective and learn how to do an energy audit at home.

 

Other dates and topics are available for groups of 15 or more.  Call for availability and additional details.  The Zoo can help with ideas for a Take Action Project.

Historic Trail Patch at Mount Vernon

Girl Scouts can earn a special patch during their visit to Mount Vernon. Pick up a booklet at the Guest Services desk to complete the tasks to earn the Mount Vernon Historic Trail Patch. Patches can be purchased for $3.50 at The Shops at Mount Vernon.

 

Admission rates: $17 adults; $8 youth ages 6-11; Free for ages 5 and under.  Patch is an additional $3.50

The Monkey Grove at The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring

Adventure Park Introducing our Newest Addition for 2013-2014-The Monkey Grove! Ideal for groups, the entire Monkey Grove area and can be rented for your Girl Scouts' exclusive use. It's the perfect space for your troop's next outdoor adventure!

Who needs a wall, when you can climb a tree? The Monkey Grove is its own section of the park and consists of 10 tree-climbs, offering different levels of challenge for climbers of all ages and abilities.

 

FeesThe Monkey Grove is available for private rental as either a half grove (up to 12 climbers) or a full grove (up to 24 climbers) rental. Call for pricing!

Climbers may include scouts/adults/siblings/Tagalongs!

Maryland Science Center Camp-In

Camp-In is a program for Girl Scout Juniors and Girl Scout third-grade bridging Brownies.  Camp-In combines an indoor, overnight adventure with exciting, interactive science education. Camp-In includes IMAX and Planetarium shows, three hands-on science workshops, time to explore many of the museum's interactive exhibits, and limited time to shop in the store. Camp-In also includes an evening snack, a light breakfast, and a participation patch. Check-In begins at 5:15 PM and the program ends after IMAX in the morning at 9:00 AM.

 

Fees: $42 per person

Nutcracker Ballet- Experience the Magic with Classical Ballet Theatre

If your troop is interested in showing off its stepping skills, make sure to sign up to perform in the Council's DC Step Showcase. All of the members of your team must be registered members of GSCNC, and routines should be appropriate for a family event. This community event is open to current Girl Scouts and friends and family.
