CraftWorks 2013 Outdoor Festival


Who: All Girl Scouts


When: Saturday, September 7th, 2013 4pm-7pm


Where: CraftWorks at Cool Spring

Come visit CraftWorks 2013 Outdoor Festival. Contemporary Folk Music will be performed by ilyAIMY and LEA. Luscious FOOD cooked onsite by CraftWorks grill masters (burgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers) as well as chips, drinks, fresh popped popcorn and ice cream. $3 gets you the sandwich of your choice and chips. Drinks, popcorn and yummy ice cream are $1 each!  Bring lawn chairs or a blanket so you can relax and enjoy the music and food from our hillside. 


A weird and wonderful silent auction will be taking place in our new beautiful environmentally conscious headquarters including antiques, crafts, gift certificates, yummy baked goods and things you didn't know you needed but you most definitely DO!
The Citizens Fire Company will be showing kids their fire truck, equipment and ambulance, demonstrating "drop and roll," and bandaging techniques.

A representative from the Martinsburg and Frederick GSCNC office will be on site to provide more information about Girl Scouts.  YOU can be one of the first to sign up for CraftWorks new Brownie (grades 2 & 3) or Junior (grades 4 & 5) troop forming NOW!

Women Soar at the Smithsonian

A Century of Women in Aerospace Family Day


Who: All Girl Scouts 


When: Saturday, September 14, 2013 10am - 3pm 


Where: National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall


For over 100 years, women have contributed to technological advances in aviation and space.  Discover the incredible contributions of women in aviation, science, and aerospace.  Hear about the historic women who have inspired today's role models.  Will you be the one of the next generation of women in aerospace?

Where:  River & Trail Outfitters & Brunswick Family Campground

Join us for riverside camping on the Potomac River in Brunswick, MD on Friday night. Followed by Saturday morning white water rafting on the final stretches of the Shenandoah River as it tumbles into the Potomac, carving a spectacular 6.5-mile watercourse through the Blue Ridge Mountains.


Both river rafting trips offer Class I-III whitewater, made up of some mellow water, permitting splashing and floating, multiple riffles and ledges, and challenging rapids such as "Bull Falls" and "White Horse."


Rafters also pass travel through three states (Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia) on this unforgettable guided whitewater rafting trip.

'Anna & the Hermitage Cats' Family Fun Day

Join author Mary Ann Allin when she reads her delightful tale about young Anna's hunt to find a special cat to paint at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Create your own museum room-in-a-box using details from Hillwood's Russian collection. Stroll the Gardens and see what treasures you can find in the Mansion.

9th Annual Girl Scout Days

Nationals Baseball Game


Who: All Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts are invited to participate in this special and growing tradition with the Washington Nationals. All are invited to attend all four events. Pre-registered Girl Scouts receive special discounts on reserved seating and a unique commemorative patch at each Girl Scout game. Collect all four! The largest Girl Scout group attending each Girl Scout Game will be selected to participate in special on-field pregame activities.


Cost: $11 ($13 if prime game) for Lower RF Terrace, OF Gallery or Upper IF Galler ticket; $8 ($9 if prime game) for Upper RF Terrace ticket; $7 ( $8 if prime game) for Upper OF Gallery ticket

9th Maryland Lighthouse Challenge  

Earn the Lighthouse Patch!

Chesapeake Chapter, U.S.L.H.S


Who: All Girl Scouts


When: September 21, 2013


Where:Throughout Maryland's Chesapeake Bay area


By completing the Maryland Lighthouse Challenge Girl Scouts will earn the Chesapeake Chapter, U.S.L.H.S. "Keeping the Lights Shining" Girl Scouts Patch. (This activity also fulfills some requirements for the Lighthouse Try It, Lighthouse Badge, Lighthouse IPP and completes an activity for the Chesapeake Bay Patch.)

No fee to receive the patch. There are miscellaneous fees relating to visiting the lighthouses, food, etc. see our website for more information.

Register:No registration required. A courtesy contact that you will be attending event is appreciated, but not required.

Girl Scout Night is Back at The Adventure Park

Who: Girl Scout Juniors through Girl Scout Ambassadors


When: Friday Sept. 20th and Friday Sept. 27th 6pm-10pm

For two nights only, the Park closes early for a special Girl Scout and Boy Scout night climbing event. Tickets must be purchased in advance- please have your Troop leader call the office to make the reservation for your group early!   


Tickets are for 2-hours of climbing- Available start times of 6pm, 6:30pm, 7pm and 7:30pm. (Limited spots available- no refunds or vouchers for unused tickets on the night of the event)

Panel discussion is 6 to 7 pm; cooking demos and discussion from 7 to 9 pm.

This Fall for the Book event introduces Girl Scouts to the largest ever line-up of cookbook authors and food writers in the history of the Fall for the Book Festival. Girl Scouts will have the opportunity to meet, talk to and do a food tasting from:

  • Norman Davis, co-owner of The Sweet Life, a custom cakery in Annandale, Va and Food Network Challenge participant
  • Krista Gallagher and Kris Schoels, authors of A Taste of Virginia Tech
  • Todd Gray (chef at Salamander Inn & Resort) and Ellen Kassoff Gray, authors of The New Jewish Table
  • Claudia Lefeve (author of Dark Beings) and Dave Lefeve, chef at Market Salamander in Middleburg
  • Forrest Pritchard (author of Gaining Ground: A Story of Farmers' Markets, Local Food, and Saving the Family Farm
  • Michael Stein, staff writer for the blog (restricted area - must have ID to enter)
  • Joe Yonan, food editor of The Washington Post and author of Eat Your Vegetables
  • Peter and Laura Zeranski, authors of Polish Classic Recipes and Polish Classic Desserts

Haute Cuisine at the Hylton or What's Cooking? Lots! features a panel discussion and cooking demos, satisfies Step 1 of the Senior Locavore Badge and Step 1 of the Junior Simple Meals Badge. Older girls! If you volunteer from 4 to 9 pm and help the authors set up/take down their book and cooking stations, you can also earn service hours!

Fee: Free admission to the event for Girl Scouts, adults and tagalongs. Authors' books will be for sale.

Exploring Careers in Wildlife Conservation:

An After-school Discussion with  

Zoo Professionals


Who Girl Scout Cadettes through Girl Scout Ambassadors and their chaperones


When: Tuesday, September 17, 2013 4-5:30pm


Where: Smithsonian National Zoological Park


Do you aspire to someday work at a zoo or aquarium? Are you curious about how science is being used to help save endangered species? Would you like to know what it takes to work at the National Zoo and care for amazing animals everyday?  


Join us for a candid conversation about what it's like to work alongside amazing animals every day!  This event will feature five professionals working in different capacities at the National Zoo, all with one goal- to help protect and conserve wildlife. Audience members will have the opportunity to hear from panelists representing a variety of backgrounds including biology, nutrition and research.  Note:  The panel is only open to students in grades six through twelve.  


Girl Scout Cadettes or Seniors can work towards their Animal Helpers or Voice for Animals badges.

Sterling Amazing Race


Who: Girl Scouts in grades 6-12



When: Saturday, September 14 or Sunday, September 15


Where: Camp Potomac Woods: Lucketts, VA


On your mark, get set, GO! You're off on an action packed day when you sign up for the Sterling Amazing Race. Here's your chance to test your skills, hunt for clues, make your way around roadblocks. Is it a journey or a race? Will you be the first to finish?


Cost: $25.00 per girl if registered by August 31. $30.00 per girl if registered between September 1st to 7th. No registrations accepted after September 7th.  

Registration includes t-shirt, lunch, prizes and pit stop snacks.

Many of these opportunities come from outside vendors and may require council approval. GSCNC has not inspected these programs or vendors and there are no GSCNC representatives at these events. GSCNC-sponsored programs that have low enrollment may also be listed. If you have questions about any of the information, please communicate with the contact person listed at the end of each item.

Please do not use the unsubscribe link below if you are not directly subscribed to e-Edition through council.  The unsubscribe link will delete the person who receives the initial send from council, not yourself.
