Celebrate America's Presidents - Tudor Place

Who: Girl Scouts of all ages

Celebrate our country's Presidents at Tudor Place.  Families enjoy an interactive tour of the 1816 mansion and children's crafts, including an art workshop with Tudor Place Artist-in-Residence Peter Waddell. George Washington's 1775 letter to Martha Washington will be on public viewing for this day only. The letter, written on the eve of Washington's departure from Philadelphia to take command of the Continental Army, reveals the human and sentimental side of this revered hero. Martha Washington herself will read the letter at 11:00 a.m. After the reading, join Martha for a traditional tea ceremony featuring her famous pound cake. Historic treasures from other Presidents will also be on view.

Annual Girl Scout Engineering Exploration Event 
 

Who: Girl Scout Cadettes

The annual engineering exploration event held by GMU SWE strives to share our passion for S.T.E.M. with younger girls. This year's program will focus on four engineering disciplines: electrical engineering (simple circuits through telegraph design), civil engineering (bridge design and bridge building competition), computer science (understanding basic algorithms and simple computer programs), and systems engineering (Understanding people, products, and processes and how they interact to satisfy a need or objective). Girls will participate in four hands on discovery activities each led by SWE members and industry professionals.

 

Fees: Girl: $8, Adult: $2

Science Wonders

 

Who: Girl Scout Brownies

Girls will explore the mysteries of science as they work with electricity, air pressure, and water. They will meet and work alongside women scientists who will answer questions and share their knowledge.

Her Story: Women in Action

 

Who: Girl Scout Brownies

 

When: March 17, 2012, 2 sessions:
Session I: 1:30-2:40 p.m.
Session II: 3:00-4:10 p.m.

 

Where: The Lyceum: Alexandria's History Museum

This special event fulfills the requirements for the "Her Story" Try-It for Brownie Girl Scouts.

 

Celebrate women and learn about issues important to women and girls in your community at this special event.  Brownies will participate in hands-on activities and a service project. They will learn about programs helping women today in our community and talk with a panel of former Girl Scouts and discover how scouting empowered them. Girls and adults will add their own future goals to a timeline of Juliette Gordon Low's story and participate in a service project helping women. Brownies and adults will be divided into small groups to visit activity "stations" during this program; large troops may be divided into smaller groups during the program.

 

Participants will be asked to bring an item to donate to the Alexandria Domestic Violence Safehouse; a list of suggested items will be provided before the event.  Visit our website to learn more at www.alexandriahistory.org, or contact The Lyceum's Education Coordinator with additional questions at (703) 746-4994.

 

Each session has space available for 35 girls - please be mindful of Safety-Wise but also allow as many girls to participate as well.

Come and explore exciting science activities during the Girl Scout Day at the National Air & Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. Take the controls of a flight simulator, see the Space Shuttle Enterprise, experiment with the forces of gravity, and speak with women scientists and engineers all on the same day. Presenters from the museum, Federal Aviation Administration, National Capital Astronomers and many more make this a unique opportunity

 

Fees: $15/car parking fee at the museum, $10 per person bus fee

Young Rider Camp

Who: Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes

 

When: February 25, March 17, March 31, April 28, May 5, May 19, June 2
All dates 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

 

Where: Twin Oaks Riding Academy

Spend an afternoon learning to ride and care for horses. Girls participate in grooming a horse, performing a barn chore to care for horses, have a mini-riding lesson to learn proper position and control, and make a craft to learn about color, breeds, etc. Riding helmets are provided by Twin Oaks. Girls learn what it's like to own a horse for a day and learn to be safe around horses while having fun. Juniors can earn the old Horse Fan badge (from the old Junior badge book), all others receive a Fun with Horses patch.

 

Fees: $45

Her Story: Women in Action - Volunteers Needed

 

Who: Girl Scout Teens and Adults

Youth volunteer tasks include:

  • Leading groups of Brownies around Lecture hall to "stations" during each program;
  • Assisting presenters as they speak with Brownie Girl Scout groups;
  • Helping with simple hands-on activities;
  • Helping visitors in museum exhibition galleries and other event support.    

We are also looking for Adult Girl Scouts, Former Girl Scouts, and Girl Scout Staff volunteers.

 

Adults can volunteer to:

  • Speak to participating Brownies about their Girl Scouting experiences as part of our Girl Scout panel. Adults may choose to serve on panel for one session or both.
  • Provide event support, including group check-in assistance, assisting presenters as they speak with Brownie Girl Scout groups, helping visitors in museum exhibition galleries, leading groups of Brownies around Lecture hall to "stations" during each program, and helping with simple hands-on activities.

What's a Dine-Around? Dine-Arounds are informal dinners, brunches, teas or other events that are hosted by Women's Advisory Board members at their homes or businesses.  They are a unique chance to gain insight from successful women and will prove to be an amazing networking session. Please note there is no cost to attend a Dine-Around.
