The Girl Scouts are celebrating 100 years of inspiring and building leaders from young girls by rocking the National Mall this summer. To help commemorate the occasion, NASA is hosting an event on June 8, 2012 at the Agency's Headquarters in Washington D.C.
NASA will host the Girl Scouts for an engaging program in aeronautics, science, and exploration. They will learn from special guests about NASA's missions, careers, and experience hands-on, interactive displays. NASA will host two sessions based on age.
The morning session will feature several hands-on activities targeted to the younger explorers. In addition, Astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper and other special guests will present to the group on some of NASA's exciting missions and discoveries. The girls will be able to take a picture of themselves on Mars, learn about solar sails, and find out where one might see NASA technology in everyday life.
The afternoon session will feature Deputy Administrator Lori Garver and Astronaut Pam Melroy and is generally targeted to Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. The program may also be of interest to younger children.
The event is at no-cost to Girl Scouts and their chaperones, but due to high demand and limited seating, pre-registration is required. Registration of a group is limited to 10, including the adult chaperone. The event is regulated by a first come, first served basis. For groups with multiple ages, the chaperone may choose the event which best meets the needs of the group. NASA will not strictly enforce the age ranges suggested for the events, but the activities planned may be more suitable to the groups listed in the agenda below. When registration is open, a link will be posted to this site.
