  • Hike the Potomac Woods RiverWalk environmental learning trail.
  • Meet women engineers, biologists and artists.
  • Attend a Silver Award workshop.

Multiple Levels

13th Annual Library of Congress
National Book Festival

Who: All Girl Scouts

 

Where: National Mall

 

When: Saturday, September 21st & Sunday, September 22nd

 

Book lovers of all ages will convene on the National Mall to celebrate books and reading. Consider a trip for your troop to the Library of Congress National Book Festival to hear from popular authors and illustrators, get books signed, and take part in fun activities. This year's line-up of children's authors includes Holly Black, Kadir Nelson, Jon Scieszka, Katherine Paterson, Rafael L�pez and many more! There is also a digital bookmobile and a pavilion to discover more about the Library of Congress.

S.T.R.I.V.E. Step Program

 

Who: Girl Scout Cadettes and Seniors

 

When: Weekly, beginning Monday, September 15

 

Where: Locations throughout Prince George's County, MD

  

Is your troop considering taking part in the Council's DC Step Showcase? The Maryland-National Park & Planning Commission is offering a program that can help boost your stepping skills. The Success through Teamwork Respect Inclusiveness Values and Excellence (S.T.R.I.V.E.) program is a community-based step program focused on developing the whole individual while promoting a healthy lifestyle. Participants will learn about the value of collaboration, the history of step and take part in competitive and exhibition shows. This program is only open to residents of Prince George's County, MD.

Homegrown Fun and 'Farm Fresh' Adventure

 

Who: All Girl Scouts

A simple visit to Summers Farm will fulfill some badge requirements. Highlighted activities include our corn maze, moonlight maze, giant jumping pillow, farm animals, pumpkin picking, hayrides, slides, pig races, farm fresh baked goods, concessions and much more!

 

Fees: Weekend group rate for 15 or more people: $8 per person with two leaders being free. Regular admission is $10 per person.  

 

Participation patches available for purchase for $1 each. Campfire sites available by reservation for an additional fee of $5.

Cookie College 2013

 

Who: Girl Scout Brownies and Girl Scout Juniors

 

When: December 7th, 2013 1pm-4:30pm

 

Where: Howard University Washington, DC

 

At Cookie College girls will earn their diploma in everything cookies! Learn about the business of selling, the history of Girl Scout cookies, and much more on an actual college campus! At the end girls will graduate and receive their participation patch.

The Brownie and Junior program has proven to increase troops' cookie sales dramatically. Girls will learn important lessons on marketing, making a pitch, and managing money. 

Fee: Cost is $5 per girl and includes all materials, snack and a patch.

Women Soar at the Smithsonian

Description:  For over 100 years, women have contributed to technological advances in aviation and space.  Discover the incredible contributions of women in aviation, science, and aerospace.  Hear about the historic women who have inspired today's role models.  Will you be the one of the next generation of women in aerospace?

9th Annual Girl Scout Days

Nationals Baseball Game

 

Who: All Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts are invited to participate in this special and growing tradition with the Washington Nationals. Pre-registered Girl Scouts receive special discounts on reserved seating and a unique commemorative patch at each Girl Scout game. Collect all four! The largest Girl Scout group attending each Girl Scout Game will be selected to participate in special on-field pregame activities.   

 

Cost: $11 ($13 if prime game) for Lower RF Terrace, OF Gallery or Upper IF Gallery ticket; $8 ($9 if prime game) for Upper RF Terrace ticket; $7 ( $8 if prime game) for Upper OF Gallery ticket

Teens

National Air and Space Museum Family Day Volunteer Opportunity!

Who: Girl Scout teens ages 16+


Where: National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall

 

When: Saturday, September 14, 2013

Looking for volunteers to assist with A Century of Women in Aerospace Family Day.

General Event Volunteers:

 

Volunteers work in shifts of � day (9:30 AM-12:30 PM or 12:00- 3:00 PM or full day 9:30 AM-3 PM.) Volunteers working the full shift have lunch provided.

 

Volunteers will assist visitors with:

 

Craft Tables: There are a number activities that require volunteers to work with children and their families at tables doing things like designing astronaut mission patches.

 

Activity Stations: Activities like "Design, Build, Test" where visitors of all ages draw blue prints, space craft, and test to see if they can fly.  These stations are quite active!

 

Getting the word out: Volunteers help pass out the agenda for the day, direct visitors to special events, or assist as ushers.

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!

Exploring Careers in Wildlife Conservation:  

An Afterschool Discussion with Zoo Professionals

 

Who Girl Scout Cadettes through Girl Scout Ambassadors and their chaperones

 

When: Tuesday, September 17, 2013 4-5:30pm

 

Where: Smithsonian National Zoological Park

 

Description: Do you aspire to someday work at a zoo or aquarium? Are you curious about how science is being used to help save endangered species? Would you like to know what it takes to work at the National Zoo and care for amazing animals everyday?  

 

Join us for a candid conversation about what it's like to work alongside amazing animals every day!  This event will feature five professionals working in different capacities at the National Zoo, all with one goal- to help protect and conserve wildlife.  Audience members will have the opportunity to hear from panelists representing a variety of backgrounds including biology, nutrition and research.   

 

Note:  The panel is only open to students in grades six through twelve.    

 

Badge Tie-In: Girl Scout Cadettes or Seniors can work towards their Animal Helpers or Voice for Animals badges.

Where:  River & Trail Outfitters & Brunswick Family Campground

This � day guided canoe trip near beautiful and historic Harpers Ferry, WV will study the health of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers, major tributaries on the watershed system for the Chesapeake Bay. Program includes Macro-invertebrate study, Water testing and a Riverside search for river reptilian dwellers. Finish up the day riverside camping on the Potomac River in Brunswick, MD on Saturday night.

The health of the Chesapeake Bay is dependent upon the actions of every citizen in the watershed. Join us in our efforts to educate the generations through this enlightening Chesapeake Bay watershed experience.
