Silvergraphics on-line orders are due TODAY!

We would never pass up an opportunity to offer our gratitude to our wonderful Charter Oak community. You are what makes this school feel like home!

A heartfelt thanks to all those who volunteer their time, energy and money for our events and fundraisers, those who tirelessly teach and support our children in so many ways, those who feed our children breakfast and lunch and those who clean up our spills sometimes late into the night. We are so glad you are part of our community!

Wish you all a relaxing Thanksgiving weekend!

Reflections on Thanksgiving
Talking to your child about the story of Thanksgiving...
Do you celebrate Thanksgiving? Have you ever started telling your children the story of Thanksgiving and couldn't find the words? Or perhaps you have read many books with your children though none seemed to offer enough information or were told from the Native American perspective?

Many cultures set aside a special day for offering thanks. Here in America, you often hear the traditional tale of Pilgrims and Native Americans coming together to share a meal but do you know the name of the tribe who first encountered the Pilgrims? The Wampanoag, which is one of over 500 tribes that existed in North America.

Want to know more? If you have a moment over this long weekend, check out this article from NPR, "How To Talk To Kids About Thanksgiving," which may offer you some guidance if you wish to dig a little deeper into our American history.

A simple search online can offer great resources and books from Native American authors. Here are a few:

  1. Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message by Chief Jake Swamp
  2. Squanto’s Journey: The Story of the First Thanksgiving by Joseph Bruchac
  3. 1621: A New Look at Thanksgiving by Margaret M. Bruchac (Abenaki) and Catherine Grace O’Neill
