Some sun can be seen over the vineyards of Glenora and along the shores of Seneca as this edition goes to press-about noon on Friday. The temperature is 55 degrees and the wind is from the northwest at 5-8 miles per hour.

In the vineyards: After a somewhat damp, cloudy and cold week the weather appears to be changing. In spite of the weather conditions the vineyard teams have continued with harvest-Riesling and Vidal at CLR-along with more fall trellis repair work and starting to spread the mulch hay. The Knapp Team also spent some time "picking rocks' in the area where the tile was installed last week.

On the press decks: A quiet week at Knapp, however Rich re-fired our Alembic still and has been distilling the wines that we will be using for distillate (the base) for Limeoncello and Lemoncello as well as our Knapp brandy. The Glenora Team finished pressing the Vidal Ice'd wine on Monday and later in the week brought in Merlot (Gibson Vineyard) and Cabernet Franc (Dalrymple Vineyards). At Chateau LaFayette Reneau the team there brought in Riesling and also pressed out the red fermenters that contained the Baco. It appears that this coming week should, other than some Catawba at Knapp, put the "wrap" on the 2014 harvest. At Glenora we will be bringing in the Cabernet Sauvignon from the Welliver Mason Road Vineyard; at CLR it will be the late harvest Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Verdot.

"Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves"-remember that song by Cher? In any event we along with other wineries were approached by a snake oil salesman this past week (in this case a wine competition promoter) with the offer of having the opportunity to be selected as one of the top producers of a specific wine variety. To take part in this great opportunity all we had to do was to send a bottle of wine and $200. Since this was a rather extensive listing-let's say the top 100 wines-the promoter (snake oil salesman) would net $20,000. The benefit to the wineries, if selected, would be a gold medal (a $1.00 value) and the opportunity to be listed in a BLOG and then connected to many social media platforms. So, net to the promoter $19,900. It is amazing how many "opportunities we (the wineries) have to promote our wines via competitions, of which some are very legitimate.

This past week was Restaurant Week in Finger Lakes Wine Country. While we do not have final or "official" numbers from Veraisons the early reports indicate that about half of our guests participated in our Restaurant Week menu selections. This event continues to grow each year.

Both Jim and Adeline (our regional sales representatives) reported that last week's New York State Liquor Store Associations Holiday shows which were held in Rochester and Albany were not well attended. Jim noted that a one show he only saw 15 people during a 6 hour period-hope they bought a lot.

We are now in sales period which is known in the trade as OND-October, November, and December. Historically this is the time frame during which most of the wine and spirits sales take place during the year-the holiday season! So our in-store tasting teams are going "full tilt"! This week 14 in total including one that will be taking place on Sunday which is somewhat unusual.

On Tuesday the editor had another meeting with the folks at QwikSolar. This is a firm that is located in Geneva, NY that can provide us with solar panels that will help us reduce our energy costs and at the same time have a positive impact on the environment. If all goes well it seems that we could be having solar panels on the roof of the winery-both on the east and west sides.

Our hats are off to the maintenance team as they are giving our big casks in our lawns which are used for decoration purposes, a new life. The casks are having their hoops tightened and repainted and as well the casks are being re-stained. It is hard to believe that the casks, which came from the Pleasant Valley Wine Company, have been with us for close to 15 years.

            Thought for the week:                        Excellence-Success

If you focus on success, you'll have stress. But if you pursue excellence, success will be guaranteed
